The death toll from the train collision in Egypt has risen to seven, while more than 100 people have been injured. Officials are currently assisting the injured and investigating the facts surrounding the incident.
Egyptian authorities updated information on the collision of two trains in the southern area of Cairo, the country's capital, which occurred on Sunday, 8 Nov 2026 GMT+7. Several train carriages derailed, resulting in at least seven deaths, including the train driver, and over 100 injured.
Egyptian Railways stated that one train traveling from Giza to Fayoum rear-ended another train that was traveling from Cairo to Aswan. The collision happened between Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa stations, approximately 100 kilometers south of Cairo.
The Ministry of Health reported that most injuries involved broken bones and head trauma. Hospitals in the area have been ordered to elevate their alert levels to the highest to accommodate the large number of patients. Meanwhile, the Egyptian Red Crescent has deployed teams to provide aid and psychological support to victims and their families.
However, the Public Prosecutor's Office warned that the death toll may rise further.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi issued a statement expressing condolences to the families of the deceased. He ordered all relevant agencies to fully care for the injured and demanded a swift investigation into the cause. If negligence is found, those responsible will face legal consequences.
Train services between Giza and Upper Egypt have been temporarily suspended to allow authorities to bring in cranes to remove the wreckage. At the same time, calls are emerging within Egypt for the Minister of Transportation to resign and take responsibility for the accident.
It is noted that the railway section between Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa stations has a history of accidents. For example, in 2002, a fire broke out on a passenger train traveling from Cairo to Luxor, officially killing more than 370 people, though the actual number may have been higher.
Later, in 2009, two more train collisions occurred near this area, resulting in dozens more fatalities.
