The Department of Fisheries warns all Thai fishing vessels to avoid navigating near the Thai-Cambodian border and recommends using the “Fisheries Next” app to assess routes for safety purposes.
In light of the unrest occurring near the Thai-Cambodian border, the Department of Fisheries is deeply concerned for the well-being of fishing communities. Therefore, it urges all operators and fishing vessels to exercise heightened caution when operating near the border area, strictly adhering to security agency announcements and avoiding risky zones until the situation stabilizes.
Mrs. Thitiporn Laoprasert, Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, stated that the Department prioritizes the safety of fishing communities. She has urgently instructed the Fisheries Monitoring Center (FMC) under the Fisheries Vessel and Operation Management Division to enhance surveillance and vessel tracking starting from 8 December 2025 GMT+7 to the present, implementing three key measures as follows.
1. Sending SMS alerts via the “Fisheries Next” mobile application to fishing vessel owners. This is to encourage all types of fishing vessels operating in the Gulf of Thailand to increase vigilance in navigation and fishing activities, especially near the Thai-Cambodian border.
2. Setting alert parameters within the VMS Tracking system as a preventive measure. If any fishing vessel is detected navigating within 5 nautical miles of the Thai-Cambodian maritime boundary, the FMC will call the vessel owner individually to warn them to navigate cautiously, prioritizing crew and property safety, and to avoid high-risk areas that may be affected by the unrest. This aims to prevent unforeseen incidents during sea operations.
3. Requesting fishermen’s cooperation to report any sightings of Cambodian naval or maritime military forces nearby immediately to the FMC or the nearest vessel entry-exit control center. This will allow assessment of the situation and enable the Thai Navy to take appropriate measures.
The Department of Fisheries is committed to closely supporting fishing communities to protect the lives and property of all fishing vessel operators, a vital sector for the nation’s food security. It also requests cooperation to continuously monitor announcements and guidance from security agencies to ensure safe sea operations until the situation improves.
Operators can conveniently track and verify their vessel’s location accurately via the “Fisheries Next” application, developed to facilitate monitoring and tracking of fishing vessels at sea.
