BDI Advances in 2026 with Launch of ThaiLLM, the Largest Thai Language AI Model, Ready for Development

BDI, or the Big Data Institute, has announced its 2026 plan to advance ThaiLLM, launching the largest Thai language AI model that has already undergone training. This model will be available for public use to develop AI applications across diverse fields. Simultaneously, BDI will fully deploy the national data integration platform (D2), revealing a large-scale data linkage system that has supported various flood management tasks in southern Thailand.

Ms. Theeranee Ajalakul, Director of the Big Data Institute (BDI). She revealed the direction for driving the country with data and artificial intelligence, stating that in 2026, the full service of the national data integration platform (Data Integration and Intelligence Platform - D2) will be launched. This platform will serve as a central hub connecting and sharing data among government agencies, the private sector, and partners. The linked data will be practically usable, alongside the Thai language AI project, ThaiLLM, which will make the largest model publicly accessible by January 2026.

Regarding progress on the ThaiLLM project, which is an open-source and open-license Thai language AI infrastructure, the institute has already released foundational models of 8 billion and 30 billion parameters. The largest model will be publicly accessible in January 2026. These models were trained using data from government agencies and private sector collaborators, marking a significant step in enhancing the Thai AI ecosystem for broad application across many fields. Trial usage has begun, with results expected soon.

"An important starting point is a specialized medical model for symptom screening, scheduled for launch in early 2026. Developed by the ThaiLLM team in collaboration with Siriraj Faculty of Medicine and public hospitals, this model is designed for preliminary evaluation, providing self-care advice and recommendations for appropriate medical consultation. It is not intended for disease diagnosis. A prototype chatbot using this model is expected to be available for public trial between April and May 2026. This will help reduce disparities in access to reliable health screening information and ease the initial burden on medical personnel."

Progress on the D2 project, the central platform for connecting and sharing data among government agencies, private sector, and partners, enabling practical use for targeted policy development, management, and driving innovation through data and AI, includes a phased plan: designing data linkage standards and infrastructure in 2025, full service launch in 2026, and AI service expansion in 2027.

. Ms. Theeranee added that BDI played a role in integrating data during the recent southern floods by linking incident reports and assistance requests from 13 citizen platforms to reduce redundancy, track case status, and promptly share information with partner agencies. This allowed all agencies to have a real-time unified overview. Collaborations with the National Statistical Office and Prince of Songkla University connected data on displaced persons in shelters to provide more accurate and systematic aid. Additionally, BDI is developing a system to monitor the locations of vehicles moved from flood zones in partnership with the Department of Land Transport, the Office of Insurance Commission, the Royal Thai Police, and volunteer networks, enabling the public to verify vehicle status accurately and up to date, thereby supporting efficient recovery processes.

"Furthermore, BDI plans to offer a New Year gift for 2026 on behalf of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) through three free online AI video courses. These courses aim to help learners enhance work efficiency, education, and content creation using AI, and develop new skills for employment. All courses will be free, representing an effort to raise digital skills for national workforce development and expand opportunities for accessible and sustainable learning."
