Thai Chamber of Commerce Understands Parliament Dissolution, Urges New Government with Full Authority Amid Pending FTAs and US Tax Talks

Mr. Phot Aramwattananon, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Thai Chamber of Commerce Council, spoke about the parliament dissolution on 11 Dec. He said the Thai Chamber of Commerce understands the political necessity behind the Prime Minister’s decision to dissolve parliament amid highly volatile domestic and international economic conditions, geopolitical conflicts, border disputes, and global economic risks, all affecting national stability and governance. He views the decision as grounded in democratic principles and constitutional law.

The Thai Chamber of Commerce urges that elections be held promptly within the legal timeframe to establish a new government with full authority as soon as possible. This urgency is due to important laws and international trade negotiation frameworks awaiting parliamentary consideration and approval, including tax negotiations with the United States and free trade agreements (FTAs) with trading partners such as the Thai-EU FTA, all crucial for the country's competitiveness.

During the caretaker government period, the Thai Chamber of Commerce believes the caretaker government retains legal authority to implement policies and measures already approved by the Cabinet, such as economic stimulus initiatives, aid and relief for citizens and businesses in the southern region facing difficulties, and managing border area situations. These actions should continue without disruption, while observing the limitations imposed on caretaker governments by regulations.

The Thai Chamber of Commerce, along with the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB), is confident that the caretaker government, civil servants, and private sector can collaborate to maintain the country’s economic stability until elections are held and a new government is formed, despite certain constraints.

Ultimately, the Thai Chamber of Commerce does not want the current dissolution to stall the country’s economic progress. It calls on all parties to foster a climate of confidence so Thailand can move forward steadily and quickly form a new government to restore economic confidence both domestically and internationally.
