Supachai Opens Up About Being BPT Candidate for Prime Minister, Urges Patience Until 20 Dec

Supachai revealed she is carefully reconsidering the candidacy for Bhumjaithai Party’s prime minister position, stressing it is a very important role that affects the country's direction. She emphasized that if she makes a decision, it must benefit the country further, but ultimately, the public should wait for the prime minister’s announcement.

At the Commerce Ministry around 15:30 on 18 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Commerce Minister Supachai Suthumpun spoke about rumors she was approached to be the Bhumjaithai Party’s prime minister candidate. She said she is still in the process of discussion and decision-making, which requires thorough consultation with her family and relevant parties because the position is highly important and impacts the country’s direction.

“The role I have been approached for is very important—not a personal matter but one of national significance. Therefore, I must consider all aspects, including the pros and cons for the public interest, not just myself. Once there is clarity, I will inform everyone, but ultimately we must wait for the prime minister’s official announcement.”

When asked if she needed to discuss with her family first, Supachai said she must talk with everyone because the work would exceed the initial four-month period agreed with her family. At first, she was to hold the position for only four months. However, her family supports her role as commerce minister, and as a citizen, they are happy because her work benefits the people and the country.

Regarding Bhumjaithai Party’s plan to announce candidates on Saturday, 20 Dec, Supachai said she is not aware of that yet and that details need to be clarified. She acknowledged she is not an expert in politics but is committed to her work and must be confident that any decision will further benefit the country.

“For now, I am still serving as commerce minister and striving to support the government in all matters. Even though the parliament has been dissolved, the Commerce Ministry and civil servants have not stopped working; if anything, we are working harder because of the current situation. We must give our full effort.”

Supachai also commented on a special cabinet meeting, stating that Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul discussed the current strengthening of the baht. The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Thailand have been working closely since last week. The Commerce Ministry has supported export data to assist in considering financial mechanisms to help businesses and maintain trade stability.
