BMTA Explains Cause of Bus 137 Crashing Into Fire Truck, Urges Care for Injured and Tighter Vehicle Inspections

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) expressed regret over the incident where Bus 137's accelerator jammed, causing it to crash into an MRTA fire rescue vehicle near the MRT Cultural Center station. Eleven people were injured. BMTA is coordinating with insurers to provide compensation in all cases and emphasized it will tighten inspections of every vehicle to ensure safety at all times.

The incident involved air-conditioned Bus 137(3-48) (loop left: Ratchadaphisek - Ramkhamhaeng), license plate 8-67026, which experienced engine failure that caused loss of vehicle control and a collision with a fire rescue truck in the park-and-ride area of the MRT Cultural Center station on 13 January 2026 at 19:20 GMT+7. The accident resulted in 11 people injured.

BMTA expressed deep regret over the incident and apologized to those injured and affected by it. After the accident, BMTA dispatched accident response personnel to the scene and promptly transported all injured to nearby hospitals. Of the injured, nine were deemed by doctors fit to recover at home, while two remain under close medical observation. BMTA coordinated with Dhipaya Insurance Public Company Limited to deploy staff to arrange compensation and support for the injured and property of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). Coverage includes compensation under the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Protection Act and vehicle insurance arranged by BMTA for affected parties.

BMTA will intensify vehicle condition inspections for all buses to ensure readiness and prioritize public safety. It will also enforce stricter oversight of personnel involved in driving operations to ensure greater caution in their duties. These measures aim to reduce potential losses and prevent similar incidents from occurring again.
