Highway Department Orders 24-Hour Closure of Main Lanes to Clear Fallen M82 Steel Structure on Rama 2 Road

The Department of Highways is urgently clearing the fallen M82 steel structure on Rama 2 Road, ordering a 24-hour closure of the main lanes. Cranes and machinery are mobilized to recover the situation and secure the area for safety purposes.

Mr. Piyapong Jiwattanakulpaisan, Director-General of the Department of Highways (DOH). He provided an update on the accident involving the launching gantry (LG) steel structure that fell during the M82 motorway construction project, section Ekachai-Ban Phaeo (Phase 7), at km 30 on Rama 2 Road. He said all relevant officials have been ordered to urgently manage the area to restore normal traffic conditions and assist those affected as quickly as possible. The incident occurred at approximately 09:15 today on the outbound main lane at km 30 in Samut Sakhon Province. The steel structure fell onto two private vehicles, injuring two people who are currently hospitalized, and causing two fatalities at the scene.

Regarding the latest developments, the Department of Highways has cordoned off the accident site for safety and to prevent harm to unauthorized persons. They have ordered a 24-hour closure of the main lanes in both directions from km 30+000 to km 30+500, advising the public to use the parallel service road instead. Officials from the Samut Sakhon Highway District and highway police are assisting with traffic management at the detour points.

Meanwhile, two 550-ton cranes and machinery have been deployed to the site to urgently lift the heavy launching gantry steel structure off the damaged vehicles. This will enable rescue teams to remove the bodies trapped inside the cars as quickly as possible. Construction work on this project has been immediately suspended to investigate the cause and prevent similar accidents.

The Department of Highways expressed deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and is coordinating full compensation for all affected parties, which will be the responsibility of the contractor. They emphasized that public safety is the highest priority and promised to provide ongoing updates.
