The Ministry of Finance, together with the Bank of Thailand and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, announced their readiness to host the 2026 Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group (the Meetings) to bolster global confidence in Thailand's role and potential as a hub for international economic and financial cooperation. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas stated that this Meeting is a significant international economic and financial forum that sets cooperation frameworks and strengthens confidence in the global financial system. Over 15,000 participants, including finance ministers, central bank governors, financial institution executives, and civil society representatives from 191 member countries, will discuss key topics such as economic growth, financial and fiscal stability, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. Hosting the Meeting again benefits Thailand in many ways: in the short term, it will stimulate the domestic economy via tourism and services; in the medium and long term, it will attract investors by showcasing Bangkok's and Thailand's appeal through infrastructure, transportation systems, and skilled personnel. It also demonstrates Thailand's vision for economic development and its role in global financial stability and sustainability under international rules, fostering multilateral cooperation. Moreover, it offers an important opportunity for Thai people to express their culture through warm and unique hospitality.
Thailand has defined its main hosting theme as “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience.” This reflects Thailand’s New Horizons after 35 years since first hosting the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in 1991, emphasizing that future development cannot be measured by economic growth alone but must be strong from within, resilient to risks, and inclusive. Under Empowering People, the Thai government believes that people are the most vital part of national development, as strong citizens form the foundation driving the economy. A sound economy must benefit and support all population groups equitably. Regarding Building Resilience, Thailand prioritizes strengthening the country’s immunity across all dimensions, including the economy, energy, finance, environment, and climate change adaptation.
The government emphasizes "public-private" collaboration as co-hosts, providing opportunities for the private sector to play a role in creating a positive experience for participants and organizing events as spaces for brainstorming, presenting innovations, and offering policy recommendations under the theme “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People, Building Resilience.” Currently, the Ministry of Finance is in discussions with private sector representatives, including within the Joint Private Sector Three-Institution Committee (JSCC) and international forums such as the World Economic Forum. Additionally, the Ministry has established a coordination mechanism between government and private sectors, with a joint meeting scheduled for 6 February at the Ministry of Finance to ensure hosting reflects voices from all sectors and benefits Thailand maximally.
Witthai Ratana-korn, Governor of the Bank of Thailand, said the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings are an important international forum to discuss global economic and financial challenges requiring international cooperation. In the financial sector, the Bank of Thailand plans to promote the concept of “Safe and Inclusive Digital Finance (SIDF) for Financial Wellbeing,” aiming to build a "new immunity" by making digital financial systems secure, stable, and accessible. This covers three main aspects: reducing digital fraud, enhancing cybersecurity, and developing readiness in the digital ecosystem to improve financial quality of life for all population groups.
Digital fraud is currently a worldwide concern due to its widespread impact on people. However, research, effective practices, and international cooperation to address the issue remain limited. Thailand and other Asian countries may have valuable experiences and policy lessons to contribute toward designing global best practices. Therefore, discussions have been held with the IMF and World Bank Group to promote strategies for reducing digital fraud to protect consumers and maintain confidence in financial systems. During the Meetings, the IMF and World Bank Group will present knowledge to help member countries develop secure, stable, and inclusive digital financial systems, improving citizens’ financial wellbeing and supporting sustainable economic development in Thailand.
Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, expressed pride in hosting the Meetings, reflecting the city's capacity in all aspects to hold a global event. This includes an efficient transportation system and infrastructure, accommodations, safety, services, as well as international-standard public health and medical services. Most importantly, the "power of the people" and the warm Thai culture of hospitality will leave a strong impression on visitors from around the world.
The landmark for the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings at the multipurpose area of Benjakitti Park in front of the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center will serve as the welcoming point for participants worldwide. It will reflect Thailand’s image as a host city ready to connect internationally and promote an atmosphere of exchange and cooperation among countries, making the Meeting a memorable event and a historic milestone for Thailand on the global economic stage. The public can visit the landmark daily from 04:30 to 22:00, following Benjakitti Park’s operating hours.
