Transport Department Cracks Down on Taxis with QR Code Linking to Thai ID for Driver Verification and Real-Time Trip Tracking

The Transport Department is intensifying control measures against unauthorized taxis by installing "QR Codes" in taxis connected to Thai ID for driver identification and real-time trip tracking. This accelerates efforts to improve passenger safety, starting installations on 2 Feb, aiming to cover over 70,000 taxis by June. The initiative seeks to build public trust in the public transport system.

Mr. Sorapong Phaitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport (DLT) revealed that to enhance safety and oversight of public taxis, digital technology has been introduced. The “QR Code” system is linked to the Thai ID system to verify taxi drivers’ identities and monitor trip status in real time. This aims to reassure passengers, reduce crime risks, and tangibly improve the image of the Thai taxi system. Implementation began on 2 February, targeting installation across more than 70,000 taxis by June.

Regarding the installation of “QR Code” stickers in taxis, these link to the Thai ID system, allowing immediate verification of driver identity, vehicle information, service history, and trip status. Passengers can scan the “QR Code” before using the service, which displays the driver’s full name, vehicle registration, and related training or registration data. This effectively prevents impersonation or driver fraud.

Mr. Sorapong stated that the department has mandated the installation of three differently colored “QR Code” stickers for varied uses: a purple sticker on the driver’s front side to verify the meter taxi driver’s identity and start of duty; a blue sticker on the left rear passenger-side window for passengers to verify driver information, rate service, commend good service, or file complaints directly to the DLT, and to estimate fares; and a red sticker on the outside of the left rear door for urgent complaints such as passenger refusal or inappropriate behavior.

When passengers scan the “QR Code,” the system immediately displays driver information and past ratings for that taxi, along with a feature to share trip details with trusted contacts like family or friends online for added safety. Additionally, the system acts like a GPS, recording location and route once the driver confirms their identity, enabling real-time trip monitoring. This system is linked to government databases, ensuring quick, transparent, and verifiable complaint handling. Passengers can also file complaints via Thai ID or hotline 1584 directly, especially for taxis not yet equipped during the transition period,” Mr. Sorapong said.

Mr. Sorapong added that the department has continuously cracked down on illegal taxis, including those with expired or revoked registrations who illegally display taxi symbols or roof lights to deceive passengers; unregistered taxis or drivers violating regulations; and taxis not registered on mandated platforms. Authorities have arrested an average of 10–20 offenders daily and promptly taken legal action.

The department advises passengers, especially women, to always check for identity verification stickers before using taxi services and to capture and share driver information screens with relatives immediately for safety. Passengers should be cautious by screenshotting driver data after scanning the “QR Code,” sharing trip details with trusted contacts, verifying identity stickers inside the vehicle, and informing someone of their destination during the trip.

However, if a taxi refuses passengers, it constitutes an offense under the Motor Vehicle Act B.E. 2522 (1979), punishable by a fine up to 2,000 baht. Such refusals are recorded and may lead to suspension of the driver’s license if repeated or if serious incidents occur, especially those affecting the country’s reputation, such as involving tourists. This can result in immediate license suspension. These efforts represent the DLT’s initiative to improve service quality. Taxis with good ratings will be rewarded after each tax cycle. I hope this marks the beginning of positive change to enhance citizens’ quality of life,” he concluded.
