The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has been actively shutting down 'ghost SIM' numbers suspected of being used in technology crimes, suspending more than 28,112 numbers nationwide in January 2026.
Mr. Trirat Wiriyasirikul, Deputy Secretary-General acting on behalf of the Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, revealed that the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) continues implementing measures to prevent technology-related crimes, working with mobile phone operators to screen phone numbers showing abnormal usage and immediately suspend their service consistently. In January 2026, over 28,112 numbers suspected of involvement in technology crimes were suspended nationwide. These numbers exhibited unusual usage patterns, such as repeatedly making calls from the same number over consecutive periods. Detailed inspections found that most technology crime activities were concentrated in border provinces, including Sa Kaeo with 7,331 suspended numbers, Chiang Rai with 4,231 suspended numbers, Nong Khai with 3,898 suspended numbers, and Narathiwat with 2,534 suspended numbers, among others.
In Bangkok, 511 numbers were suspended, with another 511 suspended in the metropolitan area. These include Nonthaburi province with 114 suspended numbers, Pathum Thani with 177, Samut Prakan with 126, Nakhon Pathom with 54, and Samut Sakhon with 40 suspended numbers.
The NBTC will continue enforcing these measures according to its official announcements, instructing mobile operators to regularly monitor phone usage exhibiting abnormal behavior and report findings weekly to ensure public safety. In December 2025, over 23,057 numbers suspected of involvement in technology crimes or categorized as 'ghost SIMs' were suspended. The NBTC will continue coordinating these efforts with relevant agencies.
