Bangkok Residents to Celebrate as Southern Purple Line and Western Orange Line Progress On Track for 2030 Opening

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has updated progress on the Southern Purple Line project from Tao Poon to Rat Burana, with civil works nearing 70% completion. Meanwhile, the Orange Line segment from Bang Khun Non to the Thailand Cultural Centre is 25.04% complete. Both lines are expected to open by 2030, strengthening Bangkok's rail system.

According to a report from the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), as of the end of February 2026, the overall civil construction progress of the Southern Purple Line project from Tao Poon to Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring) stands at an average of 69.98%. This project is a key rail system initiative that connects Bangkok's northern rail network to the southern areas across the Chao Phraya River. The plan anticipates opening for service within 2030.

Construction is divided into six contracts: Contract 1 covers Tao Poon to the National Library, with civil work at 82.74%, the most advanced section due to continuous construction and extensive completion of main station structures and underground tunnels. Contract 2, from the National Library to Phan Fa, has 78.72% civil progress, with ongoing underground and station works. This segment is crucial as it connects to central Bangkok areas.

Contract 3, from Phan Fa to Phut Bridge, is 64.22% complete. This area is within the inner city, requiring careful site management to minimize traffic disruption and impact on residents’ daily lives. Contract 4, from Phut Bridge to Dao Khanong, has 68.57% civil progress, with ongoing construction of tunnels and stations to support cross-river travel to Thonburi areas.

Contract 5, covering Dao Khanong to Khu Rai, involves construction of a park-and-ride facility and is 50.54% complete. Efforts continue on main structures to prepare for future service and facilitate public transport connectivity. Contract 6, concerning design and construction of the rail system along the route, is 58.40% complete, involving track installation, supporting structures, and components related to train operations.

The Southern Purple Line from Tao Poon to Rat Burana is among the country's major transport infrastructure projects. It plays a vital role in linking Bangkok’s rail network between the metropolitan area and suburbs. Upon completion, it will offer more travel options, alleviate traffic congestion on major roads, and enhance the efficiency of the city's public transit system.

Regarding the Western Orange Line project from Bang Khun Non to the Thailand Cultural Centre, construction progress stands at 25.04%, with civil works at 27.34%. Several areas have begun continuous construction of underground tunnels and station structures.

Rail system installations have progressed to 7.39%, covering train operation systems, electrical systems, signaling, and other components necessary for service. These works commence after significant portions of civil construction have been completed.

The Orange Line segment from Bang Khun Non to the Thailand Cultural Centre is an important project connecting western and eastern parts of Bangkok. Upon completion and opening as planned in 2030, it will boost the city's mass transit capacity, reduce traffic congestion, and improve travel convenience for residents of Bangkok and its metropolitan region.
