Department of Intellectual Property Joins DSI to Crack Down on Counterfeit Goods at Major Mall, Seizing Over 100,000 Items

The Department of Intellectual Property teamed up with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to inspect 17 locations at a major shopping mall, seizing over 100,000 counterfeit items valued at more than 30 million baht, reaffirming Thailand's commitment to rigorously combat counterfeit goods.

Mrs. Ornmon Supthaweetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, revealed that following the U.S. Trade Representative's (USTR) release of the 2025 Notorious Markets report in early March 2024, which listed one Thai marketplace among high-risk intellectual property violation markets worldwide, the Thai government accelerated proactive measures to prevent and suppress IP infringements. The department analyzed observations from the report, noting attempts to sell counterfeit goods—particularly through temporary stalls or modified sales methods to evade inspection—and coordinated with relevant law enforcement agencies to enhance enforcement effectiveness.

On 12 March 2024, the department collaborated with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to inspect suspected shops and storage sites within a well-known shopping mall in the Pathumwan district, covering 17 locations.

The inspection uncovered widespread sales of trademark and copyright-infringing products, mostly bags, shoes, clothing, and fashion items imitating famous brands. Over 100,000 counterfeit items were seized, amounting to approximately 30 million baht in damages. Authorities have gathered evidence to take legal action against the offenders.

Mall management cooperated closely with government agencies and confirmed strict enforcement of mall policies by immediately terminating leases with offenders to prevent repeat violations and to strengthen control measures over product sales within the premises.

“This inspection is part of proactive measures to monitor and prevent the sale of counterfeit intellectual property goods in key commercial areas both in Bangkok and other provinces, especially tourist hotspots and malls with high tourist traffic, to stop illicit sales that could harm the country’s economic image. The department integrates cooperation with relevant law enforcement, rights holders, and mall operators to systematically address counterfeit sales. Additionally, there is a focus on monitoring online platforms to strengthen Thailand's intellectual property ecosystem, promoting trade and investment, elevating IP protection standards to meet international norms, and boosting confidence among domestic and foreign investors.”.
