Energy Ministry Secures Major LNG Deal to Boost Imports to 1.3 Million Tons Annually Amid Middle East Crisis

Atthapol negotiated with a major U.S. LNG producer to increase supply from 1 million to 1.3 million tons annually and sought ways to expedite delivery to mitigate energy impacts from the Middle East crisis, emphasizing the government’s solid contingency plans.

Mr. Atthapol Rerkpiboon, Minister of Energy, led a team from the Ministry of Energy and PTT Public Company Limited to meet with Mr. Anatol Feygin, Chief Commercial Officer of Cheniere Energy Inc., a leading LNG producer from the United States. The goal was to increase the LNG volume delivered under the existing contract to Thailand from 1 million tons per year to 1.3 million tons, ensuring energy security throughout the remaining 15 years of the contract (until 2041).

They also discussed advancing some LNG shipments from Q3 2026 to Q2 2026 to reduce the impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict if hostilities continue. Cheniere committed to expedite efforts to fulfill the agreement as best as possible.

"Since the energy crisis began, the government has implemented various parallel measures, such as suspending oil exports, increasing oil reserves, negotiating alternative oil and gas supplies from regions outside the Middle East, promoting greater biofuel use, utilizing the oil fund to ease price impacts, and campaigning for energy conservation. We assure the public that we will overcome this crisis together," said Mr. Atthapol. / /
