
The Department of Intellectual Property has announced the registration of a new Geographical Indication (GI) product from Samut Prakan province, aiming to elevate the local fisheries product with strict quality control systems. The goal is to promote it in the premium market, generating sustainable income for the Ministry of Commerce and local communities, with an expected economic value exceeding 536 million baht.
Mrs. Ornmon Supthaweetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, revealed that the department has announced the latest registration of a Geographical Indication (GI) product to raise the standards of unique local goods to international levels. It also establishes clear quality control systems to build consumer confidence regarding the distinctive taste and origin.
The distinctiveness of Samut Prakan Two-Water Sea Bass lies in its breeding areas, which include Bang Bo District, Mueang Samut Prakan District, and Phra Samut Chedi District, areas situated at the interface between freshwater and brackish water, giving the fish special characteristics.These are:
The ecosystem, with over 63 main rivers and canals, allows the fish to swim and forage freely in earthen ponds. This results in strong, unstressed fish with well-developed muscles ideal for consumption.
Currently, more than 166 local operators produce over 4,467 tons of quality sea bass annually. By 2025, the economic value is expected to reach 536 million baht. Samut Prakan Two-Water Sea Bass is the province's fourth GI product following:
Together, these four GI products generate over 850 million baht in annual local revenue.
The Department of Intellectual Property plans to advance the use of GI logos and traceability systems to prevent counterfeit claims. It will expand marketing channels through online platforms, modern trade outlets, and international trade fairs. Additionally, it aims to connect with tourism initiatives to attract visitors to experience local fishing communities and savor premium-quality ingredients at their source.
