Electricity Rates Set to Rise! ERC Reveals 3 Formula Scenarios for May-Aug 2026, Possible Increase Above 4.59 Baht per Unit

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) reveals the forecast.Three electricity rate formulas. For the period.May to August this year.May rise.To exceed 4.59.Baht per unit, compared to the period.January to April this year, which stood at.3.88 baht.Emphasizing that the government must urgently find budget subsidies.Especially for those. In vulnerable groups who use electricity. No more than 300 units per month.

Mr. Worawit Sriananraksa, a member of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), stated that the electricity rate for the new May-August period is likely to rise from the current period due to unrest in the Middle East causing LNG prices to fluctuate.LNG prices. On the spot market have moved to 25 U.S. dollars per million BTU.The ERC has calculated. That the electricity rate for May-August will be 3.95 baht per unit, higher than the current period (January – April).Which stands at 3.88 baht per unit, an increase of 7 satang per unit.Electricity rates should reflect the.True costs. If the government decides to cap the new electricity rate, it must inform businesses and industries. And the public of the facts.

"For the September – December period, if the war prolongs and LNG prices continue to rise, due to the arrival of winter in the European Union, and if we lack tools to support electricity rates, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT)still has to bearoutstanding debt and interest payments as before, electricity rates could rise above 4 baht per unit. This would affect businessesthat have contracts based on lower electricity rate assumptions, potentially impacting them. Currently, the European Union is rushing to stockpile LNGto prepare for a prolonged warand winter, causing global market price fluctuations."."

The ERC has calculated the variable electricity rate (FT) adjustment.into three cases. Case 1: If no relief measures are applied to reflect the total fuel cost, including the outstanding compensation fees (AF) actually incurred bythe Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT),which bears the fuel and power purchase costs on behalf of the public, amounting to 36 billion baht, this would cause the May-August electricity rateto increase from the current 3.88 bahtto 4.59 baht per unit, a rise of 70 satang per unit.Case 2: If the outstanding compensation fees (AF) of 36 billion baht to EGAT are not paid, this will impact EGAT's financial status. The May-August rate would be 4.08 baht per unit, an increaseof 20 satang per unit.

Case 3: The ERC considers the collectionor refunds from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), and EGAT for investments not yet realized, totaling 9.4 billion baht, to help reduce electricity rates. Without repayment of the 36 billion baht outstanding compensation fees to EGAT,the rate would rise by 7 satang per unit, to 3.95 baht per unit. All three cases.remain subject to change due to LNG price volatility. The ERC will review LNG prices again for the electricity rate calculation formula before presenting itto the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC Office)on 25 March. Afterwards, public hearings will be held on the FT charge for the May – August billing period.Policy authorities.have signaled that they will

cap electricity rates for April – May at 3.88 baht per unit.Byusing various mechanisms.to prevent electricity rates from rising. He believes the government must considerallocating budgets to help with electricity costs, especially for the vulnerable groups who useno more than 200-300 units per month as well.Read more news "Government Policy"
