State Railway of Thailand Launches KIHA 40/48 Diesel Railcars for Don Mueang–Ayutthaya Feeder Service Trial Starting 20 Apr 2026 Check Schedule

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is ready to launch the new diesel railcars “KIHA 40 and KIHA 48” for a feeder trial service on the Don Mueang–Ayutthaya route. This connects the Red Line commuter rail and Don Mueang Airport, helping reduce public transportation costs amid rising energy prices, starting 20 April 2026 GMT+7.

A reporter from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reports that the SRT is preparing to operate diesel railcar services “KIHA 40 and KIHA 48” in a feeder format to connect travel between Bangkok and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. This aims to facilitate public access to the Red Line commuter rail and Don Mueang Airport. The service will be trialed for six months starting from 20 April 2026 GMT+7.

Mr. Anan Phonnimdaeng, Deputy Governor and Acting Governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), said the SRT has a policy to continuously develop its rail network and connections with public transport systems while improving service efficiency for the public. They have received 20 units of KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 diesel railcars from East Japan Railway Company (JR East) of Japan and refurbished them for use in Thailand.

Currently, six units have been fully refurbished and tested. These are ready for trial feeder service on the Don Mueang–Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya route, providing comfortable connections for passengers and helping ease their travel costs, offering another travel option.

Service will operate Monday to Friday, with six round trips daily for six months. The trial runs from 20 April to 31 October 2026 GMT+7, stopping at eight stations and one halt: Don Mueang, Rangsit, Chiang Rak, Thammasat University halt, Chiang Rak Noi, Khlong Phutsa, Bang Pa-in, Ban Pho, and Ayutthaya stations.

Both diesel railcar models have been upgraded in engine, electrical systems, air conditioning, and passenger interiors to enhance comfort and safety. Features include air conditioning, enclosed toilets, and luggage space, accommodating both regular commuters and tourists.

This route also serves as a key transit connection in Bangkok, supporting passengers from the Red Line commuter rail at Rangsit station and travelers to Don Mueang Airport. It also facilitates convenience for Thammasat University Rangsit campus students and integrates with various local public transport modes.,Daily ridership is expected to be no less than 1,000 passengers.

Mr. Anan added that introducing the KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 diesel railcars reflects the SRT’s commitment to enhancing service quality and expanding travel options. This helps reduce private car use, alleviate traffic congestion, and promote efficient rail-based public transit. After the trial, the SRT will evaluate results to improve services and sustainably develop the rail transport network as a national backbone.

Passengers can buy tickets at stations and find schedule details and fares by contacting the customer service center at 1690, available 24 hours, or via the official Facebook page “PR Team, State Railway of Thailand.”
