State Railway of Thailand Reports Over 620,000 Passengers During 7-Day Songkran Festival in 2026, No Stranded Travelers

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) summarized travel during the 7-day Songkran festival in 2026, reporting over 628,000 passengers. The Southern Line led with the highest number of travelers. SRT also implemented strict measures to manage return trips to Bangkok, ensuring safety and no stranded passengers.

Mr. Methaphat Sunthorwaraphas, Director of the Public Relations Center at the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), revealed that train services during the Songkran festival from 10–16 April 2026 operated smoothly. They adequately accommodated outbound and return travelers with high safety standards and no reports of stranded passengers.

During the festival, SRT maximized service capacity in line with the Ministry of Transport's policy by fully adding carriages to regular trains and introducing 22 additional special train trips. These covered main routes including the Northern, Northeastern, and Southern lines to facilitate fast and safe travel for people returning home or traveling for tourism.

Passenger statistics for 6 routes show the Southern Line leading.

Over the 7-day Songkran festival in 2026, a total of 628,514 passengers traveled by train, with 623,775 on regular services and 4,739 on special supplementary trains.

Breaking down by route, the lines with the highest passenger numbers in order were:

  • Southern Line: 222,672 passengers
  • Northeastern Line: 164,587 passengers
  • Northern Line: 116,216 passengers
  • Eastern Line: 68,760 passengers
  • Mahachai Line: 46,982 passengers
  • Maeklong Line: 9,297 passengers

Preparedness for return trips to Bangkok with no stranded passengers

Beyond managing travel during the 7-day period, SRT has fully prepared to support people returning to Bangkok after Songkran, including those extending their holiday into the following week.

They have deployed staff and organized systematic train operations to ensure passengers reach their destinations conveniently and safely. SRT also expressed gratitude to the public for trusting train services and cooperating with strict safety measures.
