The Department of Rural Roads (DRR) is progressing with infrastructure development in Upper Northern Thailand, allocating over 768 million baht to build a new road connecting the Chom.3029 and Highway 1006 intersections in Chiang Mai. The highlight is a 6-lane road with an underpass tunnel designed to alleviate traffic congestion and accommodate the growth of Chiang Mai city and San Kamphaeng district. Full operation is expected by 2028.

The Department of Rural Roads invests 768 million baht to build a 6-lane road and underpass connecting Chiang Mai city.

Mr. Phichit Hunsiri, Director-General of the Department of Rural Roads (DRR). He revealed progress on the construction of the road connecting Chom.3029 and Highway 1006 intersections in Mueang and San Kamphaeng districts, Chiang Mai. Construction is divided into two main parts to maximize traffic flow efficiency.

  • Surface road construction. A 6-lane asphalt concrete road (3.5 meters wide per lane) with sidewalks and a 4.9-meter-wide bicycle lane.
  • Underpass (tunnel) construction. A 4-lane tunnel, 660.435 meters long, equipped with standard drainage and lighting systems.

Addressing traffic congestion between Chiang Mai and San Kamphaeng to support urban expansion and boost tourism.

Rapid growth in Chiang Mai has caused increased traffic on main roads such as Highways 1006, 121, and Rural Road Chom.4039. This new road will help ease traffic, allowing residents to travel more conveniently, quickly, and safely.

Beyond transportation benefits, the project aims to drive the economy in Upper Northern provinces by improving goods transport and tourism, supporting population growth especially toward San Kamphaeng district in the future.

Environmental care and PM 2.5 dust reduction during construction.

The DRR is aware of environmental impacts, particularly PM 2.5 dust issues, and has instructed contractors to continuously water the construction area and keep materials organized for road user safety.

Additionally, the project underwent public consultation and a tripartite agreement was signed between the DRR, contractors, and community representatives to ensure construction aligns with local needs. Completion is scheduled for 2028.
