Good News: Thailand Cleared of Allegations in Silicon Metal Subsidy Case, Avoids US Countervailing Duties

Thai exporters have reason to celebrate after the US revealed the final findings of its investigation into Countervailing Duties (CVD) on silicon metal products, determining that Thailand is the only country in the group cleared of government subsidy allegations as it did not cause harm to the US domestic industry.

Arada Fuengthong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT), said that amid global trade pressures and new protectionist measures, Thailand received very positive news that greatly benefits its exports.

The United States International Trade Commission (U.S. International Trade Commission:U.S ITC) announced its final determination on 9 April 2026 regarding the US investigation

into the application of countervailing duties (Countervailing Duty: CVD) on silicon metal imports from Thailand, Norway, Laos, Australia, and Angola, with Thailand emerging as the only country cleared of US allegations.

Arada added that the U.S. ITC unanimously concluded that imports of silicon metal do not harm the US domestic industry, leading to the immediate termination of the investigation against Thailand and confirming that Thai silicon metal products will not be subject to countervailing duties.

This is because Thailand does not provide subsidies that distort the market and continues to trade internationally under fair trade rules, which represents a significant long-term competitive advantage. Furthermore,

in 2024, Thailand's exports of silicon metal  to the US were valued at 655,629,838 baht (approximately 93.50 million US dollars), accounting for 25.57 percent of the market. Therefore, this final ruling not only exempts Thailand from US CVD charges but also enhances the credibility of Thai products globally, especially in the silicon metal industry, a key raw material in modern industries such as electronics and clean energy like solar cells. Thus, avoiding countervailing duties on silicon metal demonstrates Thailand's capability and competitiveness in the global trade arena.

Meanwhile, the DFT, as the main agency responsible for international trade protection and retaliation, is committed to reducing trade barriers and ensuring fair trade, as well as sustainably protecting the interests of Thai entrepreneurs.
