The Department of Land Transport has announced a reduction of 3 satang per kilometer in interprovincial bus fares, following the drop in diesel prices to 40.20 baht per liter. This will take effect on 29 April 2026 to reflect actual costs and help reduce the public's living expenses.
Mr. Soraphong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, revealed that the Ministry of Transport has assigned the Department of Land Transport to monitor the situation of diesel prices, which have been volatile due to conflicts in the Middle East region, directly impacting the cost structure and liquidity of bus operators. In response, the Department of Land Transport has held meetings with representatives from operators nationwide to listen to concerns and collaborate on solutions to these issues.
Recently, diesel prices have decreased and currently stand at 40.20 baht per liter. The Subcommittee on Transport Fare Rates has resolved to reduce fares for category 2 buses (Bangkok to provinces) and category 3 buses (interprovincial) by 3 satang per kilometer per seat. For example, a 100-kilometer trip will see a 3 baht reduction per seat. This reduction will take effect from 29 April 2026. Any exemptions or concessions will follow previously approved criteria.
The Director-General of the Department of Land Transport added that today's fare reduction was based on a calculation formula reflecting actual cost factors updated for current conditions, including the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Energy Index, and labor wages. This formula allows fares to adjust up or down according to circumstances, enabling operators to charge fares that truly reflect operational costs and maintain continuous service. Furthermore, this measure aims to ease expenses for the public and encourage the use of public buses, enhancing travel safety and reducing traffic congestion. The Department is committed to facilitating convenience alongside lowering the cost of living, ensuring safe and pleasant travel for all citizens.
