Intellectual Property Department (IPD) The Ministry of Commerce is advancing the creative industry by consulting executives. "The One Enterprises" promotes GI products integrated into dramas and series to create soft power driving the economy, while accelerating amendments to copyright law to protect actors according to international standards.
Mrs. Oramon Sapthaweetham, Director-General of the Intellectual Property Department, revealed after discussions with Mr. Thakolkiet Veerawan, Chief Executive Officer, and the team from The One Enterprises Public Company Limited at GMM Grammy Place, that this meeting reflects the commitment of both public and private sectors to jointly strengthen Thailand's content industry, enabling it to compete globally. This includes promoting the skills of industry personnel alongside developing content to support international market growth.
They emphasized systematically linking the values of "story – identity – economic value," aligning with the policy of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Mrs. Supachai Sutthumpun, who aims to empower Thai SMEs by using intellectual property to add value, expand business opportunities, and elevate creative works and distinctive Thai products in global markets.
In this meeting, both parties discussed upgrading copyright laws and actors' rights. The department is currently proposing amendments to the Copyright Act to comply with accession to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Performances and Phonograms Treaty (WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty: WPPT) under obligations of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The goal is to complete this by 2026, enhancing protection of performers' and phonogram producers' rights to fairly benefit in the digital era. The department is open to private sector feedback to guide appropriate legal adjustments and plans to organize forums to raise awareness of copyright law across all related sectors, balancing rights protection with sustainable development of Thailand’s film and drama industries.
Additionally, both parties see opportunities and benefits for communities by jointly proposing ways to incorporate Geographical Indication (GI) products—distinctive and locally connected—into drama and series content (tie-ins), as well as news programs. Examples include featuring GI products as food or souvenirs in scenes, using GI production areas as filming locations, and linking characters' stories with the lifestyles of GI product communities. This approach raises awareness, adds value, and expands market opportunities for Thai products through widely viewed entertainment media. Thai dramas, series, and news programs serve as important soft power, showcasing local charm, lifestyles, and national identity to domestic and international audiences, thereby generating tangible economic added value.
On this occasion, the department invited The One Enterprises to partner in driving the Thailand Character & Content Expo (TCEX), a key platform showcasing the potential of Thailand’s character and content industry, connecting businesses to opportunities both domestically and abroad.
The event will be held from 9 to 12 July. The company expressed interest in exhibiting popular character and art content in the IP Showcase zone and joining the campaign “Don’t Buy, Don’t Sell, Don’t Use Counterfeits” to promote respect for intellectual property rights and awareness of the impacts of counterfeit goods on creators, businesses, and the national economy. This aims to foster an environment conducive to sustainable growth of Thailand’s creative industry.
