On 16 May 2026 at 15:35, a serious accident occurred involving freight train number 2126 traveling from Laem Chabang to Bang Sue Junction, operated by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). The train collided with bus line 206, which was stopped over the railway tracks due to a red traffic light at the Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection, located at the level crossing between Khlong Tan and Makkasan stations. The collision caused a severe fire that spread at the scene. Initial reports indicate 8 fatalities inside the bus and approximately 25 injured. Rescue teams and relevant authorities rushed to provide assistance and transport the injured to hospitals.
Regarding the impact on the Airport Rail Link (ARL) Makkasan station, located above the accident site, smoke from the fire spread over the platform. To ensure passenger safety, Makkasan station was temporarily closed and trains passed through without stopping. Firefighters eventually controlled the fire below, and the ARL resumed normal service at Makkasan station at 16:35.
Mr. Pichet Kunathamrak, Director General of the Department of Rail Transport, led a team of officials and experts to the accident site immediately, coordinating with related agencies to verify facts. He ordered facilitation of assistance to those affected and instructed the SRT to fully cooperate with police in gathering evidence and investigating the cause of the accident.
The Ministry of Transport and the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) have ordered relevant agencies to enforce strict measures. The SRT, together with the DRT, must accelerate the accident investigation and examine the facts around the level crossing to promptly address the root causes.
The Ministry of Transport and the Department of Rail Transport express deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and to those injured in this incident. They also thank rescue workers, firefighters, police, and all personnel who swiftly controlled the situation and provided aid.
