
A BMTA Bus No. 206 stopped blocking the railway tracks at the Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection before being struck by a State Railway freight train, causing a fire. Reporters stated that on 16 May 2026 at 15:35 GMT+7, a serious accident occurred when freight train No. 2126 traveling from Laem Chabang to Bang Sue Junction collided with Bus No. 206, which was stopped on the tracks due to a red light at the Asoke-Phetchaburi intersection near the Asoke-Din Daeng level crossing (between Khlong Tan and Makkasan stations). The collision caused a severe accident and a fire at the scene. Initial reports confirmed 8 deaths inside the bus and about 25 injuries. Rescue workers and related agencies promptly assisted and transported the injured to hospitals.
Kittikan Jomduang Charuwornpolkul, Director of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), addressed the accident involving the BMTA bus and the train at Makkasan intersection. He said the BMTA is fully responsible and committed to compensating the deceased and injured. Each deceased will receive preliminary compensation of approximately 1.5 million baht. Injured individuals will be compensated based on severity: general injuries receive about 80,000 baht, while cases of disability will receive up to 500,000 baht.
All medical expenses will be covered under the insurance law, with the BMTA taking full responsibility. The authority emphasized it will not abandon those affected by this incident. The injured have been sent to several hospitals, including Rajavithi Hospital, Ramathibodi Hospital, and Police General Hospital. However, the exact number of deaths and injuries remains uncertain as rescue teams continue detailed investigations at the scene.
