BMTA Accelerates Compensation Following Train-Bus Collision: 1.5 Million Baht for Fatalities, 500,000 for Injuries

Reporters stated that on Saturday, 16 May 2026, at approximately 15:40, an air-conditioned bus on Route 206 (3-30), license plate 12-5641, operated by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), was involved in an accident at the Makkasan railway crossing on Asok-Din Daeng Road. The collision caused a fire affecting the bus and nearby vehicles, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

According to reporters from the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA):BMTAexpresses its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, the injured, and all affected by this accident. BMTA fully acknowledges that this incident caused loss of life and property, which should never occur. The authority commits to taking full responsibility to the best of its ability, guided by humanitarian principles and law, without any evasion.

Following the incident, Mr. Siripong Angkasunglek, Deputy Minister of Transport, along with Mr. Kittikarn Chomduang Jaruwarapolkul, BMTA Director, and other executives immediately visited the scene to closely oversee the situation. They coordinated with rescue units, hospitals, and police to urgently transport the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. Additionally, BMTA organized passenger transfers at Hua Lamphong Station to safely send stranded passengers to their destinations.

BMTA also coordinated with disaster relief agencies, police, and all relevant units to comprehensively gather data on all affected individuals.

Furthermore, BMTA instructed direct coordination with Muang Thai Insurance Company Limited and the compensation fund system under the Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Protection Act to deploy staff to manage medical expenses and expedite fair and rapid compensation payments to victims.

  • For fatalities, an initial compensation and relief fund of 1,500,000 baht per individual has been established.
  • For injured victims, initial relief payments start at 80,000 baht per person, with compensation up to a maximum of 500,000 baht each.

Regarding the deceased, BMTA is closely monitoring the identification process and actively contacting families to facilitate swift compensation payments. BMTA executives plan to visit all injured patients in hospitals to provide assistance, encouragement, and demonstrate sincere accountability in all aspects. Progress reports on compensation and the situation will be made continuously and transparently.

Beyond immediate relief measures, BMTA will conduct lessons learned to review and inspect route safety throughout Bangkok and the surrounding five provinces: Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, and Nakhon Pathom. This will be combined with strict enforcement ofdriver disciplinefor all BMTA personnel.

Reporters noted that later the same evening (16 May 2026) at around 22:00, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul urgently visited the accident site personally. He was accompanied by Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasunglek, BMTA Director Kittikarn Chomduang Jaruwarapolkul, and other BMTA executives who provided close situation updates.

The Prime Minister instructed BMTA and all related agencies to integrate their efforts to provide the best care for the injured and families of the deceased, and to expedite fair compensation payments promptly.

Regarding the clearance of the accident site, after the police forensic team completed evidence collection, BMTA coordinated to deploy cranes to remove the damaged bus from the Makkasan railway crossing. The bus was then transported to the Rama 9 depot by about 01:00 toclear the railway tracksand restore normal traffic flow for the public as quickly as possible.
