Following the train-bus collision on 16 May, there have been several developments regarding the train driver and the track controller, both of whom have been provisionally dismissed. The investigation results are expected to be concluded by 20 May 2026 GMT+7.
Siripong Angkasungkleaw, Deputy Minister of Transport, said after delivering policy directives and inspecting the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) that the latest findings reveal the train driver holds an SRT driving license but lacks a track operation permit as required by the new Transport Act.Transport Act.The new Department of Land Transport Act, effective since 27 March 2026, created a gap in operations because the driver has yet to verify identity in the system. Although there is a 120-day grace period, the driver was still allowed to operate due to holding a train driving license.Regarding the positive drug test.Preliminary reports show multiple positive results for drugs, but further confirmation tests are pending.
Drug testing occurs in cycles but is not conducted daily. Daily testing applies only to alcohol screening, which until now has been done randomly.Random testing. From now on, testing will be mandatory and comprehensive across all agencies with vehicle drivers, including SRT, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), and the Transport Company Limited.
This morning,Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakuldirected that legal proceedings be taken against both the track controller and the driver. The investigation is expected to be finalized and clarified by 20 May 2026 GMT+7.
"Actually, several people have already been dismissed and committees formed, including the driver and track controller, who have been suspended pending investigation. There is no need to wait until Wednesday. Actions have already been taken." said the Deputy Minister of Transport.
As for uniforms, train drivers must wear them, but this is a minor issue. The driver is certainly at fault—seriously so—for causing loss of life and property. There is no need to discuss other matters anymore. From now on, the entire system must be reformed: from no testing to mandatory testing for everyone with no exceptions. Anyone not complying will face penalties.
Regarding the 100-meter braking distance before the incident, it was confirmed insufficient. However, determining fault is complicated because testimonies conflict. The driver said they did not respond to the wall, while the wall operator said the brakes were applied and there was no time to respond. Nonetheless, standards must be established.Braking depends on speedand weight, which must be improved. He also ordered the State Railway to improve freight trains operating at night, as their weight exceeds passenger trains, requiring longer braking distances.
