Supachai discussed with the U.S. trade negotiation strategic team to expedite concluding the reciprocal trade agreement before the Section 301 investigation results are announced, aiming to reduce tariff risks and protect Thailand's export benefits.
Ms. Supachai Sutthumpun, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, revealed that she chaired the first 2026 meeting of the strategic U.S. trade negotiation working group, together with Mr. Warawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Industry; Ms. Nongnuch Petchrat, Thailand's trade representative, and representatives from relevant agencies. The Prime Minister appointed this committee on 28 April 2026, with her serving as chairperson. The group also includes the Foreign Minister, Industry Minister, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister, and Finance Minister as vice chairs, alongside relevant agency representatives. Their role is to drive tax measure negotiations with the U.S. to protect the rights and benefits of citizens, farmers, and domestic businesses.
Ms. Supachai stated that today's meeting aimed to set negotiation directions on various issues with related agencies, especially focusing on outstanding points under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Thailand and the U.S. She urged all agencies to collaboratively find constructive solutions and proposals to promote mutual benefits under the agreement. She also emphasized the importance of accelerating the conclusion of negotiations promptly, particularly before the Section 301 investigation results are announced, to ensure tariff certainty and foster a positive trade and investment environment between Thailand and the U.S.
Ms. Supachai added that during her discussions with U.S. trade representatives (USTR) in Washington DC from 3-5 May 2026, the U.S. side clearly expressed their desire for Thailand to expedite finalizing the ART negotiations and thanked Thailand for its sincerity in rebalancing trade. This cooperation will benefit the ongoing Section 301 investigations the U.S. is conducting on several countries, including Thailand. Both sides agreed on the need for continuous policy and technical-level discussions.
In conclusion, Ms. Supachai emphasized the alliance and economic partnership between Thailand and the U.S. Thailand is committed to strengthening and expanding relations across various dimensions, including trade balance adjustments and investment promotion, especially in sectors where Thailand has strengths such as energy and processed foods. This aligns with Thailand's policies and strategies aimed at enhancing energy and food security, while also reinforcing a sustainable economic partnership with the U.S.
