Suriya Inspects Progress of 2026 Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo at 77%, Projects 32 Billion Baht Revenue

"Suriya" visited Udon Thani to monitor the progress of the 2026 International Horticultural Expo, currently at 77% completion. He stressed the importance of finishing on time with transparency, highlighting the event as a green economic driver expected to circulate over 32 billion baht.

Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, visited the site to follow up on preparations for the “2026 Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo,” scheduled from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027 at Nong Daed Wetland, Kud Sa Subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani District, Udon Thani Province. He was joined by Deputy Minister Watcharapol Khaokham, government executives, representatives from public agencies, local authorities, private sectors, and community members.

Mr. Suriya revealed that the 2026 Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo is a significant international event for Thailand and the first worldwide to be held fully on a wetland area. The event is organized under the concept “Diversity of Life: Connecting People, Water and Plants for Sustainable Living”, or “The diversity of all life, linking people, water, and plants toward sustainable living.” This reflects an approach to agricultural development that balances people, water, plants, ecosystems, technology, and the green economy.

As of May 2026, construction progress stands at approximately 77.47%. Key structures such as the welcome center, public relations building, greenhouse, bridges, walkways, utilities, and drainage systems are nearing completion. Currently, efforts focus on landscaping, systems installation, and preparing remaining exhibition areas to meet international standards and the scheduled opening.

“I have instructed all involved agencies that although progress exceeds 70%, the remaining time is critical. All work must be completed with quality and standards to ensure beauty, safety, and a positive image of Thailand. Budget management must be transparent, auditable, and maximize benefits for the public and the nation.”

He also emphasized that relevant agencies prepare for visitor support, including transportation, traffic, public transit, parking, security, emergency medical services, food outlets, accommodations, and linking key tourist sites in Udon Thani. This requires integrated cooperation between the public and private sectors.

“Udon Thani is not merely the event location but will reflect the potential of the Northeast region as a center for horticulture, high-value agriculture, ecotourism, and a green economy ready to welcome visitors worldwide.”

Mr. Suriya added that the 2026 Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo is more than an exhibition; it will be a new "green economic engine" for the Northeast. It is expected to draw about 3.6 million visitors, generate over 32 billion baht in circulating revenue, add more than 20 billion baht in economic value, and create approximately 81,000 jobs. Benefits will spread to the public and tourism sectors, including hotels, restaurants, transportation, community enterprises, farmers, and local businesses.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture prioritizes post-event development or Expo Legacy by planning to transform the Nong Daed area into a world-class public park, youth activity center, environmental learning center, and venue for major future provincial events.

“Our goal is to open the event on time, ensure international-quality standards, maintain transparent and auditable budgeting, and develop the area for the benefit of the people and Udon Thani Province.”

The Ministry will comprehensively monitor all aspects, including budget use, construction, safety, services, publicity plans, and post-event land use to make the 2026 Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo a source of national pride and an important platform showcasing horticultural expertise, agricultural innovation, and sustainable economic development to an international audience.
