The Department of Intellectual Property invites Thai people to drink “Warich Milk” to celebrate World Milk Day (1 June), highlighting the quality of this new GI milk product from Sakon Nakhon province that generates over 134 million baht in market value annually.
On the occasion of World Milk Day, observed every 1 June, the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce, joins in promoting milk consumption and supporting Thai dairy farmers.
It has announced the registration of “Warich Milk” from Warich Phum district, Sakon Nakhon province, as Thailand’s newest geographical indication (GI) product and the first GI milk product, reflecting the potential of quality local cow milk. This elevates community products and increases market value while inviting the public to enjoy quality Thai milk on World Milk Day for good health, supporting farmers and driving Thailand’s economy together.
Oramon Sapthaweetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, revealed that the department emphasizes promoting local identity products and leveraging intellectual property to add economic value
to communities, entrepreneurs, and farmers in line with policies from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce (Supachai Sutthumpan). The goal is to advance the geographical indication (GI) protection mechanism beyond a mere certification mark to become an essential tool
for adding value, creating unique selling points, and enhancing the competitiveness of community products in the modern economy. It is also a crucial start for building brands, innovation, and linking production areas to cultural and agricultural tourism routes.
Recently, the Department of Intellectual Property registered “Warich Milk” as a GI product of Sakon Nakhon province. This product stems from royal projects and the benevolence of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who has continuously promoted dairy farming for farmers
within the Warich Phum Dairy Cooperative under the royal initiative of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great. Support has included funding, equipment, production technology, personnel development, and infrastructure construction to enhance raw milk production and processing capacity, as well as expanding production into pasteurized milk, UHT milk, and animal feed comprehensively.
Oramon said Warich Milk is 100% pure cow’s milk from Holstein Friesian crossbred cows, produced in the foothills and valleys of the Phu Phan mountain range, which benefits from abundant water sources from the Nam Un Dam and Huai Nam Yat reservoir, and enjoys cool, comfortable weather. The geography and climate are ideal for agriculture, allowing year-round cultivation of fodder crops, resulting in milk that is creamy white, rich in texture, with a sweet, smooth taste and natural aroma.
Currently, the Warich Phum Dairy Cooperative has 86 farmer members, producing as many as 16,869,871 boxes annually, sold at 8 baht per 250 ml box, creating a market value exceeding 134 million baht per year. The cooperative’s dairy farms and processing plants
also have potential for development as agritourism destinations, enabling visitors and interested parties to learn about the full fresh milk production process—from dairy farming and farm management to product processing—helping generate income and spread economic opportunities sustainably within the local community.
The Director-General added that on this World Milk Day 2026, it is a good opportunity to invite everyone to consume this quality Thai GI milk, "Warich Milk," which reflects the identity, wisdom, and value of Sakon Nakhon’s local production. Besides being healthy, it supports farmers’ incomes and the Thai community economy. It also raises awareness of the nutritional value of cow’s milk and the role of dairy farmers in ensuring the country's food security.
Oramon concluded that the Department of Intellectual Property is committed to continuously promoting and protecting Thai GI products by improving quality, safeguarding community rights, and expanding opportunitiesfor Thai GI products in global markets to gain international recognition and added value.
