Ministry of Transport Orders Full-Scale Emergency Drills at 22 Airports to Enhance Regional Airport Safety

Deputy Minister of Transport Patthapong has ordered the Department of Airports to conduct full-scale emergency drills at 22 airports nationwide. He is scheduled to visit Nakhon Phanom on 27 June 2026 to oversee safety enhancements and build passenger confidence according to international standards.

The Deputy Minister of Transport emphasized maximum safety and ordered emergency drills at airports.

Mr. Patthapong Patraprasit, Deputy Minister of Transport, stated that air transport is a vital part of the country's economy and society, making safety a top priority that must be continuously improved. He has directed the Department of Airports to carry out full-scale emergency and incident drills at affiliated airports to ensure all personnel are prepared to handle potential real situations.

These drills not only prepare personnel and equipment but also build confidence among passengers and the public using the airports. On 27 June 2026, he will attend the opening ceremony of the full-scale emergency drill at Nakhon Phanom Airport (KOP-EMEX) and inspect the staff's operations, reviewing the readiness of safety and security systems during the exercises and public service. The focus is on protecting lives and property. He believes this effort will enhance staff capabilities, strengthen management systems, and foster cooperation between government and private agencies locally. Most importantly, it will reassure passengers and operators that Thailand's aviation system is safe, meets standards, and is ready to support future industry growth.

The Department of Airports is committed to continuously improving safety and conducting concrete drills to achieve tangible benefits for the public and the nation.

Full-scale drills will be conducted at 22 airports to meet ICAO and CAAT standards.

Meanwhile, Mr. Danai Ruangsorn, Director-General of the Department of Airports, explained that the drills comply with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) regulation No. 37 regarding airport standards, which requires at least one full-scale emergency exercise every two years.

Additionally, the operations align with international standards from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 14 (Aerodromes) and Annex 17 (Security) to provide correct procedures in case of real incidents.

Integration of all agencies to simulate realistic scenarios

According to the Department of Airports, in 2026, drills are planned at all 22 affiliated airports: Nan Nakhon, Ranong, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Lampang, Roi Et, Loei, Chumphon, Mae Sot, Narathiwat, Phrae, Nakhon Ratchasima, Krabi, Surat Thani, Udon Thani, Buriram, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Khon Kaen, Trang, Ubon Ratchathani, Pai, and Phetchabun. Each location will have different simulated scenarios.

The drills will involve cooperation from provincial agencies such as fire departments, rescue services, medical teams, forensic units, military, police, and other relevant organizations to maximize crisis management effectiveness.
