The MRTA explained the water leakage in the Purple Line Southern metro tunnel at Wongwian Yai intersection, assuring that the water volume is controlled, there is no structural impact, and no road subsidence has occurred. The Prime Minister visited the site and ordered strict safety monitoring.
A water leakage incident occurred at the sump pit under the underground metro tunnel (Sump Pit) approximately 30 meters below road level near Wongwian Yai intersection. This is within the construction area of the Purple Line project section from Tao Poon to Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road), Contract 4, between Phut Bridge and Dao Khanong, on 8 July 2026.
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) clarified that the initial assumption is that water seeped through the joint area of the sump pit, which does not affect the tunnel's structural strength. The Contract 4 construction contractor is accelerating ground improvement work to permanently stop the water leakage while closely controlling the seepage volume according to engineering principles. Currently, the leakage volume is under control, with no impact on road or nearby building subsidence. The MRTA has instructed the construction supervision consultant PMCSC2 and the Contract 4 contractor to continuously inspect and monitor the structural stability and safety of adjacent buildings.
At 11 p.m. on the night of 8 July, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, together with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Pipat Ratchakitprakarn; Assistant Ministers of Transport Siripong Angkasukrit, Pattharaphong Pataraprasit, Sanphet Boonyamanee; and Assistant Minister of Interior Worasit Liangprasit, visited the site to follow up on the situation.
The Prime Minister and Minister of Interior ordered the MRTA to increase continuous safety monitoring of nearby buildings to instill public confidence and prioritize citizen safety. They also instructed preparation of emergency response plans with support from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and the police.
