Siriphong Inspects Purple Line MRT Tunnel Water Leak at Wongwian Yai, Orders Tight Control on Road Subsidence

Siriphong visited Wongwian Yai intersection to follow up on the incident of water leakage in the Purple Line MRT tunnel revealing increased road subsidence and ordering urgent safety measures for the public

9 July 2026 GMT+7 Mr. Siriphong Angkasakulkiat, Deputy Minister of Transport, along with Mr. Panya Chupanich, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, visited the site to monitor the water seepage into the underground MRT tunnel's water collection pit at Wongwian Yai intersection, within the Purple Line MRT construction area, section Tao Poon - Rat Burana (Kanchanaphisek Ring Road), contract 4, between Phuttha Bridge and Dao Khanong. On 8 July 2026, representatives from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning, and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand joined the site visit.

They found increasing road surface subsidence and are urgently addressing the impacts.

According to Mr. Siriphong, the visit aimed to monitor progress, including impacts on buildings and road surfaces affected by the incident, and to hear concerns from local residents and businesses. Despite the water volume decreasing after the incident on the night of 8 July, road subsidence has worsened. Therefore, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn have instructed related agencies to take urgent measures to ensure safety, prevent further seepage, and monitor subsidence to avoid additional deterioration. They are also expediting safety measures in the construction area and surroundings. Regarding additional traffic closures around Wongwian Yai intersection, the agencies are to consider options with public safety as the top priority.
