The Department of Land Transport is preparing new ministerial regulations to enforce blue license plates for newly registered electric vehicles starting in the first quarter of 2027. Existing EVs, numbering over 400,000, will not need to change plates but will receive jasmine flower magnetic stickers instead.
Mr. Sorapong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport (DLT) He revealed progress on enforcing electric vehicle (EV) license plates for new personal electric cars and motorcycles, stating that the DLT has drafted new ministerial regulations defining the size and design of electric vehicle license plates. This update aims to improve standards to accommodate the growth of electric vehicles in Thailand and support government policies. Additionally, by distinguishing EV plates from combustion engine vehicles, rescue workers can immediately know how to handle vehicles safely in case of accidents.
Recent progress indicates that the DLT will submit the proposal to the Ministry of Transport for presentation to the Cabinet for approval around late August 2026. Afterward, ministerial regulations will be amended, a process expected to take about three months. By the first quarter of 2027, new electric vehicles will be able to use the new license plates, which will feature a light blue reflective background with black characters.
Mr. Sorapong added that currently, there are over 460,000 registered electric vehicles, and it is expected that by the end of 2026, the total will exceed 520,000. Newly registered EVs will have distinctive license plates with a blue background and black lettering. Existing EVs will not be required to replace their plates but will receive a special additional symbol to display their electric vehicle status. The DLT has designed a magnetic sticker with a jasmine flower graphic and the letters “EV” inside the flower's stamen.
According to interesting transport statistics for June 2026, there were a total of 45,947,597 registered vehicles nationwide as of 30 June 2026. Specifically, 274,988 vehicles were registered in June alone, including 246,992 new registrations, an increase of 4.28% from the previous month. Most were personal motorcycles (72.08%), followed by passenger cars with no more than seven seats (21.94%). New electric vehicle registrations in June totaled 39,606, up 1.01% from the prior month, divided into 14,378 HEVs, 22,899 BEVs, and 2,329 PHEVs.
