Department of Intellectual Property. It revealed that signature products loved by sour flavor enthusiasts such as “Dane Nakhon Lime” and for sweet flavor fans, “Ratchaburi Nam Dok Mai Mango” have been registered as new Geographical Indication (GI) products of Ratchaburi province, reinforcing the quality and standards of local agricultural goods. GI status protects producers’ rights, elevates product value, opens opportunities to increase income, and drives sustainable community economic development.
Mrs. Ornmon Supthaveetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, stated that the department is advancing the policy of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Supachai Suthammanont, who emphasizes using intellectual property to add value to Thai products, create trade opportunities, increase farmers' income, and strengthen community economies. The department is tasked with accelerating GI utilization in various aspects to elevate high-value agricultural products and enhance Thai products’ competitiveness in the global market.
Mrs. Ornmon said that Ratchaburi is one of the country's key agricultural production areas, renowned for quality, reputation, and product identity, making it highly capable of developing local products through the GI system to add value and boost competitiveness. The latest two GI registrations bring Ratchaburi's total GI products to eight: Ratchaburi Dragon Jar, Bang Chang Chili, Photharam Preserved Mustard, Bang Phae Giant Freshwater Prawn, Ban Kha Pineapple, Ratchaburi Aromatic Coconut, Dane Nakhon Lime, and Ratchaburi Nam Dok Mai Mango. These contribute over 8.539 billion baht in economic value to the province in 2025, reflecting cooperation among farmers, communities, and local agencies to preserve traditional knowledge while maintaining production quality and standards, resulting in agricultural products recognized by domestic and international consumers.
Regarding “Dane Nakhon Lime”, this lime variety has long been renowned for its distinctive features: round, flattened shape; thin, smooth, glossy skin; fragrant aroma released when rolled or squeezed; translucent white flesh; few and small seeds; high juice content; sour but not bitter taste; and strong fragrance. These characteristics result from Ratchaburi’s fertile loam soil with good drainage, water sourced from the Mae Klong River basin, and a suitable climate, combined with the traditional cultivation knowledge and experience passed down through generations. This has made Dane Nakhon Lime recognized as a premium Thai lime variety, generating economic value exceeding 716 million baht annually.
Meanwhile, “Ratchaburi Nam Dok Mai Mango” is a golden Nam Dok Mai variety, including Nam Dok Mai No. 4, popular domestically and internationally. It features elongated fruit with a rounded stem end and tapered tip, thin and smooth skin, bright yellow when ripe, dense and fine-textured flesh without fibers, sweet taste, and fragrant aroma. The seed is flat and small. These qualities arise from the suitable geography and climate for cultivation, along with farmers' knowledge and management of production in the area. This ensures consistent quality and year-round yield. The mango is exported to various countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, and the European Union, generating over 166 million baht annually.
Mrs. Ornmon added that GI registration for Dane Nakhon Lime and Ratchaburi Nam Dok Mai Mango marks a significant step in elevating Ratchaburi’s identity products, providing protection and adding value through local wisdom. It opens up trade opportunities and sustainable community economic development. After GI registration, the Department of Intellectual Property will collaborate with the province and related agencies to promote GI utilization throughout the value chain, from maintaining production standards, building local brands, developing product extensions, promoting GI raw materials in the food industry, identity-based tourism, and creative businesses that leverage cultural and local wisdom as selling points, to expanding domestic and international markets. This will increase the value of Ratchaburi's GI products, secure stable income, and raise community economic levels in the long term.
