The Intellectual Property Department warns producers and sellers against falsely using the name "Lampang Chicken Bowl" to sell products in the market. This constitutes a violation of the Geographical Indications Protection Act. and the Trademark Act. Penalties include up to 4 years imprisonment and fines of 400,000 baht; the public is advised to buy products bearing the genuine GI label.
Mrs. Ornmon Suptaweetham, Director-General of the Intellectual Property Department, Ministry of Commerce, revealed the case of foreign-made products imitating “Lampang Chicken Bowl” a Thai Geographical Indication (GI) product. The department warns those who produce and sell Lampang Chicken Bowls by falsely using the name “Lampang Chicken Bowl” or Lampang Chicken Bowl on products not made in the designated area or without production processes meeting the registered GI standards, as this violates the Geographical Indications Protection Act B.E. 2546 (2003), punishable by fines up to 200,000 baht. Moreover, unauthorized use of the Thai GI label violates the Trademark Act B.E. 2534 (1991), punishable by up to 4 years imprisonment and fines up to 400,000 baht, or both.
However, if the case involves using patterns or designs similar to the GI product without using the GI name, the GI label, or any indication of origin, even if the bowl resembles the authentic GI product, it may not violate the Geographical Indications Protection Act. This law protects the name and indication of origin, not the general product design.
The department invites the public to choose Lampang Chicken Bowls that correctly display the GI product name and GI label. If the GI label or clear indication of origin is missing, consumers should carefully verify information before purchase to support Thai GI producers and reduce the risk of buying falsely claimed GI products. Anyone who sees or suspects products using the GI name but not originating from the designated area or meeting registered standards can contact provincial commerce offices or the department hotline at 1368 for investigation and consumer protection coordination.
Production of chicken bowls in Lampang Province began around 1957 after discovering high-quality white clay deposits in Chae Hom District, suitable for ceramics. Chinese residents established the first factory and passed down pottery-making culture, which spread widely. Lampang Chicken Bowl was registered as a GI product in 2011 due to its quality, distinctiveness, and connection to local wisdom.
Use of local raw materials Mix Lampang white clay with black clay, horse tooth stone, and glass sand to create a clay body that is both flexible and strong.
Shaping by traditional knowledge Formed using a jiggering machine, trimmed with knives and sponges, dried or fired at 800 degrees Celsius.
Hand-painting and glazing Hand-painted with designs of chickens, banana trees, and peony flowers, glazed with a mixture of horse tooth stone, glass sand, white clay, and limestone, then fired at 1,200–1,250 degrees Celsius for 6–9 hours, resulting in durable colors and long-lasting use.
Currently, about 10 producers manufacture approximately 2,600 pieces per year. Those passing the committee's evaluation are authorized to use the Thai GI label on their products for two years, assuring consumers of quality and traceability.
