Deputy Minister of Transport Siripong attended GICC 2026 in South Korea to discuss rail technology exchange with Korea National Railway (KNR), examining the GTX model and aiming to attract investment in Thailand's southern high-speed rail to elevate the country's infrastructure.
On 15 Sep 2026 GMT+7, Siripong Angkasunkulkit, Deputy Minister of Transport, accompanied by Panya Chupanich, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Kiti Aekwallop, Assistant Governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand, and delegation, attended the opening ceremony of the Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference 2026 (GICC 2026), a global infrastructure event organized by South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
Mr. Siripong said he led the Thai delegation at a luncheon hosted by MOLIT as part of GICC 2026, where he delivered a toast on behalf of Thailand's Ministry of Transport. He expressed gratitude to MOLIT and the International Contractors Association of Korea (ICAK) as hosts and organizers, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in transport infrastructure as vital to national economic development. In the afternoon, he met with Mr. Lee An Ho, Vice President of Korea National Railway (KNR), exchanging information on South Korea's high-speed trains, the Great Train Express (GTX) commuter rail, and Thailand's Red Line suburban railway. They also discussed South Korea's experience adopting foreign rail technology to develop and manufacture trains, locomotives, and systems independently. This transition could greatly benefit Thailand's rail development, creating jobs and promoting domestic parts usage in line with government policy. KNR showed interest in investing in Thailand's southern high-speed rail project and expressed willingness to share information and cooperate with the Ministry of Transport.
Mr. Siripong concluded that Thailand is open to cooperation with KNR in knowledge exchange, feasibility studies, technology transfer, personnel development, and participation in Thailand's rail projects as appropriate. This discussion reflects the Ministry of Transport's commitment to upgrading Thailand's rail infrastructure to be efficient, safe, modern, and capable of sustainably supporting future passenger and freight transport. It also aims to advance tangible rail cooperation between Thailand and South Korea.
