The Department of Land Transport is advancing the elevation of safety standards by mandating "foreign transport vehicles" entering Thailand to install GPS devices to ensure the same standards as Thai transport vehicles, effective from 1 January 2027.
Mr. Sorapong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, revealed that Thailand, as a party to several international road transport agreements, facilitates cross-border commercial vehicle movement through designated checkpoints, reducing logistics costs and enhancing competitiveness. However, recently, there has been a continuous increase in foreign transport vehicles entering the kingdom to support economic expansion, especially in agricultural product transport.
Therefore, the Department of Land Transport issued a regulation on installing travel data recorders in foreign vehicles entering Thailand to upgrade regulatory oversight in line with international cooperation frameworks and to ensure fairness and equal competition for Thai transport operators.
The Department has announced the installation of travel data recorders (Global Positioning System: GPS) in foreign vehicles operating in Thailand to enhance international road transport supervision according to cooperation frameworks and obligations. This proactive measure requires foreign transport vehicles entering Thailand to install GPS systems matching those mandated for Thai transport vehicles. The regulation takes effect on 1 January 2027.
The Director-General added that the main objective is to raise road transport safety in the country to the highest international standards, improve efficiency in monitoring, supervising, and controlling vehicle routes, as well as effectively managing speed and drivers’ working hours throughout their operations in Thailand.
