The Department of Intellectual Property is advancing the Thailand-China GI 3+3 project, exchanging registrations of three local products each, aiming to complete by early 2027 to expand markets and boost export value, while upgrading services with AI technology.
Mrs. Oramon Supthaweetham, Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property. She revealed that during bilateral talks with China's National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) on 22-23 Sep 2026 in Beijing, significant progress was made in advancing strategic cooperation on intellectual property. Particularly successful was the pilot project of exchanging GI product registrations, with each side registering three products.
These talks stemmed from an agreement between the Prime Ministers of Thailand and China during the July 2026 visit to China, aiming to complete all GI registrations by early 2027 as a key step to open markets and increase the value of Thai community product exports.
In discussions with CNIPA, the Department of Intellectual Property formally submitted registration applications for three Thai GI products to be registered in China, namely:
Thung Kula Rong Hai Jasmine Rice.
Phetchabun Sweet Tamarind.
Pak Phanang Ruby Pomelo.
Meanwhile, Thai authorities received registration applications from China for three GI products: Maotai Guizhou Liquor, Penghuangtan Tea, and Dehua White Porcelain, which will undergo the registration process in Thailand accordingly.
Additionally, both sides discussed upgrading intellectual property services. The Department shared approaches to applying AI technology in systems such as “AI Image Search” and “Trademark Checker” to assist in searching trademarks from vast databases, and a fast-track examination system especially for patents in target industries. These aim to help businesses utilize intellectual property more quickly. They also explored the possibility of cooperation to exchange patent examination results, which would reduce redundant reviews and speed up patent application processing.
Regarding SAMR, discussions focused on implementing an action plan under the Memorandum of Understanding on Intellectual Property Enforcement Cooperation, signed on 20 Jul 2026 by Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supachai Sutthumpan and SAMR’s Director-General and Party Secretary. The plan aims to clarify collaboration frameworks and promote action, reducing key obstacles for Thai and Chinese SMEs in expanding overseas markets. Both sides preliminarily agreed that the 2027 activity plan may include training for government officials and entrepreneurs, exchanging best practices on intellectual property infringement prevention—especially online infringement and GI product violations—and considering mechanisms to reduce dishonest trademark registrations.
