GIT welcomes the CIBJO resolution to adopt "Synthetic" as the international standard term for lab-created diamonds and gemstones, aiming to clarify and reduce consumer confusion while supporting Thai businesses to confidently expand in global markets.
The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), a public organization under the Ministry of Commerce and a member of CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, endorses CIBJO’s latest directive to use the term “Synthetic” for lab-created diamonds and gemstones to ensure clear, consistent communication in the industry worldwide.
Following the CIBJO Congress 2026 held in Vicenza, Italy, on 7 Sep 2026 GMT+7, the CIBJO Executive Committee approved proposals from the Diamond and Coloured Stone Commissions to update the Blue Books by designating “Synthetic” as the primary term for human-made products possessing chemical composition, physical properties, and structure identical to natural gemstones. CIBJO recommends using “Synthetic” in international communications with consumers and stakeholders to ensure clarity.
In Thailand, this approach aligns with consumer protection principles, as cut gemstones and jewelry are regulated products under the Labeling Control Committee’s announcement, requiring accurate disclosure of synthetic gemstone types to avoid consumer misunderstanding. The Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) continues to oversee product labeling regulations.
Therefore, as a CIBJO member, GIT will consider adopting this guideline, using “Synthetic” for synthetic diamonds and all types of synthetic gemstones to align with global standards and ensure consistent terminology in inspection reports and academic communications.
Choosing the term “Synthetic” is also crucial for international trade, as countries differ in naming and disclosure requirements. France, for example, has clear regulations mandating the use of “synthétique” for synthetic gemstones and requires the correct gemstone name to appear on labels, trade documents, and related advertising.
This guideline is not merely about terminology but about harmonizing communication from producers, traders, laboratories, to consumers, especially when products are sold or transferred to foreign markets. Using internationally accepted terms from the start reduces risks associated with differing national regulations and supports Thai businesses to operate confidently in global markets.
