Department of Land Transport Extends Deadline for Vehicle Tax and Driver’s License Renewals, Waives Penalties for Flood Victims Until 30 Oct 2026

The Department of Land Transport, responding to government policy, announced an extension for vehicle tax, registration, and driver’s license renewals, waiving penalties and exempting retesting to aid flood victims until 30 October 2026.

Sorapong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, said the department is expediting actions following government and Ministry of Transport policies to alleviate difficulties for citizens in flood-affected areas who face travel challenges when visiting land transport offices. They have issued an announcement extending deadlines for vehicle registration, tax, and driver’s license renewals, while adjusting services at land transport offices in Bangkok and its vicinity.

Land Transport adjusts opening and closing plans for offices in flood-affected areas.

Sorapong Paitoonpong, Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, revealed that due to ongoing flood situations, the department has adjusted operations of land transport offices in Bangkok and surrounding provinces as follows.

• Offices open (for essential services/appointments only). Bangkok Land Transport Office Area 1 (Bang Khun Thian), Area 2 (Taling Chan), Area 5 (Chatuchak), along with Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani provincial land transport offices, focusing on annual vehicle tax payments, driver’s licenses, vehicle inspections, and public facilitation services.

• Offices temporarily closed. Bangkok Land Transport Office Area 3 (Phra Khanong), Area 4 (Nong Chok), and Samut Prakan provincial land transport office are closed per Cabinet resolution due to floodwaters affecting surrounding areas.

To assist flood victims, the Department of Land Transport issued the “Announcement on Extension of Deadlines for Vehicle Registration, Tax, Driver’s License, and Other Procedures in Flood-Affected Provinces 2026,” covering Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, and other provinces declared flood disaster zones by governors, for those with deadlines between 28 September and 30 October 2026, with key measures as follows.

1. Vehicle registration and tax matters.

• Waiver of fines and additional fees. Vehicles with annual tax payment or registration actions due (such as ownership transfer, address change, non-use notification, or fuel type change) between 28 Sept and 30 Oct 2026, if processed within the extended period, will be considered on time without fines or extra charges.
• Notification of non-use due to flooding. For vehicles affected by floods, the registrar will clearly note in the registration booklet: “Not in use due to flood damage starting from (date of flood event).”

2. Driver’s licenses and professional drivers.

• Exemption from written and driving tests. For driver’s licenses expired over 1 or 3 years, applicants renewing within the extension period are exempt from written and driving retests.
• Acceptance of expired supporting documents. Supporting documents such as medical certificates or e-Learning training results expired during this period will be accepted by registrars for processing.
• Transport operator license renewals. Operators may apply for transport license renewals in advance up to 30 October 2026, which will be considered timely submissions.

Online channels allow 24-hour vehicle tax payments.

The Director-General of the Department of Land Transport added that the public can pay annual vehicle tax online 24/7 via the websiteeservice.dlt.go.th, the DLT Vehicle Tax Plus app, or the Paotang app to avoid travel during flooding.
