Suriya Tackles Flooding in Or Ngoen Community, Accelerates Drainage Efforts to Dry Area in 2 Days and Pushes Long-Term Drainage Project

"Suriya" visited the flood-affected Or Ngoen community in Sai Mai district, bringing relief bags and food to distribute to more than 10,000 people. He ordered the Royal Irrigation Department to deploy three water pumps to expedite drainage, aiming to dry the area within two days, and confirmed that upstream flooding would not impact Bangkok.

Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives accompanied by his team, visited the flood situation at the Or Ngoen Housing Community, Or Ngoen subdistrict, Sai Mai district, Bangkok. He listened to reports on the water levels and residents' hardships and brought food, relief bags, and essential supplies from affiliated agencies to assist the victims. The Royal Irrigation Department urgently brought three water pumps to the area, expecting to drain the floodwater within two days.

Mr. Suriya stated that the Prime Minister is concerned about the people affected by the flooding and has instructed relevant ministers to provide immediate assistance where possible. The Or Ngoen community has over 5,000 housing units and is estimated to house more than 10,000 residents. He visited personally to assess the hardships and received reports from representatives of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Sai Mai district office, and the Or Ngoen branch of the National Housing Authority. Water levels on the day of the visit had decreased by nearly half compared to the previous day, but urgent drainage and delivery of essential supplies to affected residents remain necessary.

"Currently, the water pumps and staff are ready to assist, and we expect to drain the area within two days. I want the residents of the Or Ngoen Housing Community to rest assured that the government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, which I oversee, will not abandon them," emphasized Mr. Suriya.

Regarding concerns about upstream water, Mr. Suriya assured that, based on received information, the Chao Phraya River passing through Bangkok can still accommodate the water flow. The current flooding in the area is due to heavy rainfall, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Royal Irrigation Department are working to drain the water as quickly as possible.

Mobilizing Relief Bags and Animal Feed to Aid Flood Victims

For initial assistance, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has mobilized resources from several agencies, preparing a total of 2,100 relief kits: 500 from the Department of Livestock Development, 400 from the Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation Department, 500 from the Royal Irrigation Department, 200 from the Rubber Authority of Thailand, and 500 from the Land Development Department.

Additionally, supplies include 1,000 sets of eggs, 1,000 boxed meals from the Department of Fisheries, and 1,000 sticky rice with pork sets. Food for dogs and cats was also distributed to help households with pets. The Land Development Department supported 2,000 liters of wastewater treatment agent (PD 6) to treat stagnant floodwater in the community.

Pushing the "Chai Nat-Pa Sak-Gulf of Thailand" Drainage Project to Solve Long-Term Flooding Issues

Mr. Suriya also updated on the progress of the Chai Nat-Pa Sak-Gulf of Thailand drainage project, which has been submitted for Cabinet consideration. The next steps involve preparing detailed plans and contractor qualifications and dividing construction tasks to expedite the process within an 8-year timeframe from contractor selection to completion. Areas ready to begin will start first, with some parts expected to commence by mid-2027. For zones requiring land expropriation and resident relocation, coordination with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security is underway to prepare housing for those affected, ensuring construction proceeds alongside care for the community.
