The Ministry of Transport is raising safety standards at railway crossings nationwide by integrating efforts with Bangkok and 15 provinces, having already closed 132 high-risk illegal crossings. They are converting these into official crossings, accelerating the installation of automatic barriers, and preparing for the World Horticultural Exposition in Udon Thani.
Mr. Panya Chupanich, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and head of the transport mission group, chaired the joint committee meeting to consider permits and resolve problems at railway-road crossings.:The meeting aimed to monitor and drive the resolution of railway crossing issues in collaboration with Bangkok and 15 other provinces nationwide. It reviewed progress from provincial subcommittees, which have so far closed 132 accumulated high-risk illegal crossings across the country.
They also jointly considered advancing safety measures in key areas, including upgrading illegal crossings to official crossings in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Approval was given to convert 25 illegal crossings after the State Railway of Thailand installed automatic boom barriers. The State Railway will expedite a memorandum of agreement with road authorities to jointly maintain and control safety standards.
Mr. Panya added that the Ministry of Transport has also preparedsafety measures for theWorld Horticultural Exposition in Udon Thani province. The plan includes constructing two level crossings and temporary platforms to facilitate and maximize safety for the public and tourists entering and exiting the event area. They emphasized the need for safety measures and area management after the event to comply with regulations and long-term safety standards. The meeting also stressed close integration among all agencies to effectively address railway crossing issues with engineering traffic standards and prioritize public safety.
