Transport Ministry Accelerates Dredging of Three Water Channels in Songkhla to Prepare for Southern Monsoon and Prevent Recurrent Flooding

Sanphet is accelerating waterway clearance ahead of the rainy season to enhance drainage efficiency, reduce flood impacts, and improve safety for water transportation.

Today (24 Oct 2026), Sanphet Boonyamanee, Deputy Minister of Transport, visited Songkhla province to monitor progress on the Marine Department's dredging projects at three locations: Sakom Canal in Chana district, Khok Rai water channel in Songkhla city district, and Samrong Canal in Khao Rup Chang subdistrict, Songkhla city district. He inspected machinery readiness, work plans, and heard about challenges, aiming to boost water drainage efficiency before the southern monsoon heavy rains.

During the visit, Arif Saraeng, Director of Marine Office Region 4; Phanu Phasakdee, Director of Waterway Development and Maintenance Office 4; and Hiranwatti Suebpand, Director of Songkhla Marine Office Branch, along with officials, reported on the project's progress.

Sanphet stated that dredging waterways is a critical proactive measure as the south enters monsoon season, during which Songkhla often faces waterlogging and slow drainage. Accelerated dredging of accumulated sediment removes waterway obstructions, allowing water to flow faster into the sea. It also maintains channel depth to facilitate safe passage for local fishing and passenger boats.

The dredging plan and budget for all three sites involve removing a total of 115,000 cubic meters of sediment within a combined budget of 4.497 million baht, divided as follows.

  • Sakom Canal, Chana district Dredging volume: 40,000 cubic meters; budget: 1.8 million baht; duration: 60 days.
  • Khok Rai water channel, Songkhla city district Dredging volume: 10,000 cubic meters; budget: 387,000 baht; duration: 35 days.
  • Samrong Canal, Khao Rup Chang subdistrict, Songkhla city district Dredging volume: 65,000 cubic meters; budget: 2.31 million baht; duration: 120 days.

Sanphet added that he has instructed the Marine Department to expedite work at all three sites according to plan and deadlines, closely monitor dredging efficiency, and identify obstacles to water flow. Priority is given to areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall impacts. Coordination with local authorities and related agencies is emphasized to ensure operations align with the area's drainage system and truly benefit the public. Budget management must be efficient, transparent, and consider community and environmental impacts.

“Preparation for the rainy season must begin before problems arise, especially by maintaining waterways and drainage routes ready for use. We must quickly address points obstructing water flow to reduce risks and mitigate impacts on people. At the same time, we must ensure that those working in fishing and water transport have safe and convenient travel. The Ministry of Transport will continuously monitor progress to ensure the dredging of these three waterways yields tangible results and forms part of Songkhla's flood preparedness,” Sanphet said.
