Tragic Fire at Commercial Building in Krathum Baen: Three Family Members Burned to Death Embracing Each Other

A fire broke out at a commercial building in Krathum Baen. Neighbors saw smoke and tried to break down the door to call out to those inside. Five people managed to escape, but three—mother and children—were burned to death inside, found embracing amid the flames.

On 30 Nov 2025 GMT+7, Police Lieutenant Colonel Suchart Sombun, investigation officer at Krathum Baen Police Station, received a report of a fire at a four-story commercial building in Krathum Baen District, Samut Sakhon Province. He coordinated with firefighters from Om Noi Municipality, Suan Luang Subdistrict Municipality, Tha Mai Subdistrict Administrative Organization, and over 10 nearby units to respond.

At the scene, the fire was burning from the ground floor up to the upper floors. Firefighters sprayed water to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighboring buildings. It was initially reported that eight people were inside at the time. Five escaped, including three injured—one seriously and two with minor injuries—who were treated at Vichaiwetch Om Noi Hospital and Mahachai Hospital. Two others escaped unharmed but were in shock.

Three people remained trapped inside: a mother and her two children named Thanya Harnkla, 33; Thawatchai Sarathongpim, 7; and Yathida Sarathongpim, 4. It was later confirmed that all three died in the fire inside the second-floor bedroom of the building.

Amnat Charoensri, Deputy Governor acting for Samut Sakhon Province, along with Pirunrot Nakdonthri, District Chief of Krathum Baen; Boonchu Niltanom, Mayor of Om Noi Municipality; Police Lieutenant Colonel Chumphon Chatsanguanchai, Deputy Superintendent of Krathum Baen Police Station; Anutara Pangputhiphong, Head of the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office; and local leaders visited the scene to oversee fire control and assist the injured until the victims' bodies were recovered from the burned building.

The deputy governor ordered an urgent survey of the damage and immediate assistance for the families of both the injured and deceased.

Relatives of the deceased said the family rented the building to run a noodle shop in the evenings. During the day, everyone rested inside with the doors securely locked. At the time of the fire, all were asleep. The three who died were locked in the bedroom. When a neighbor knocked on the door, they woke up and came downstairs, seeing the fire and escaping through the flames. The mother and children did not hear the knocking and were unable to escape or be rescued, resulting in their deaths from the fire.

A neighbor living next door said they were working when they saw smoke coming from under the tightly closed corrugated sliding door. They tried for several minutes to break the door with a hammer to wake those inside. When the door was opened, fire rapidly erupted near the water heater by the bathroom on the ground floor. The fire then spread violently to the upper floors. Although everyone tried to use fire extinguishers, they were unable to control the blaze.

Initially, investigators from Krathum Baen Police Station, forensic experts, doctors from Krathum Baen Hospital, and Ruamkatanyu Foundation personnel examined the bodies and collected evidence to determine the exact cause of the fire. The three victims were sent for further autopsy at the Forensic Institute, Siriraj Hospital, before being handed over to their family for funeral rites.
