Big Lek Emphasizes No Sign of Cambodia Negotiating Ceasefire, Ignores Pressure from Third Countries

"Big Lek" emphasizes no signs "Cambodia" negotiating a ceasefire, ignoring pressure from third countries, affirming that only the military and people's voices are considered.

On 16 Dec 2025 GMT+7, a reporter reported that General Natthaphon Nakpanich, Minister of Defence, said after visiting an evacuation center in Sa Kaeo province that the National Security Council (NSC) has been closely monitoring the Thailand–Cambodia border situation. Overall, progress is gradual but careful time is still needed to resolve the issue thoroughly.

General Natthaphon stated that today's meeting involved receiving information from all relevant agencies. The Thai side is striving to manage the situation as best as possible without setting a time frame, to avoid pressuring officials on the ground. However, he affirmed that the government and military will take full action.

Regarding the ceasefire issue, the Minister of Defence said it depends mainly on Cambodia's stance, which must clearly show an open end to hostility. Currently, Cambodia continues to reinforce its frontline and exhibits threatening behavior toward Thailand, making the situation likely to prolong. Only if Cambodia stops reinforcing and withdraws all frontline forces from the confrontation line will hostility be considered ended. This differs from the clash on 24 Jul, when an agreement was made only to withdraw heavy weapons; this time, full withdrawal of forces from the frontline is necessary.

Meanwhile, Cambodia has not shown any softening in stance and continues to fire into Thai territory almost daily. Although the Cambodian government states its desire to resolve the problem peacefully and to cease fire, behavior on the ground contradicts these claims, so Thailand cannot trust Cambodia's genuine intention to end the conflict. At present, there has been no direct contact from Cambodia, despite about 3–4 third countries expressing willingness to mediate.

Thailand does not prioritize pressure or stances from other countries but considers only the parties involved. As minister, he listens mainly to the military and people. Regarding rumors that China requested Chinese-made weapons seized by Thailand at Chong Anman area, there is no law or regulation requiring Thailand to return these arms. The usual approach is either to utilize or destroy them, and the military is currently reviewing the matter.

Regarding rumors of mercenaries infiltrating tourist areas, no confirmed reports have been received yet. However, he has ordered security agencies to strictly investigate, coordinating with the Royal Thai Police and asking the public to help monitor and immediately report any suspicious activity.

Regarding inviting community leaders in Sa Kaeo province for discussions, General Natthaphon said security measures have been enforced since clashes began on 24 Jul, including border checkpoint closures and increased identity checks to prevent infiltration by opposing spies. All measures aim to ensure safety for residents and personnel in the area.
