The long-awaited day "The patient" has been receiving treatment at "Vachira Phuket Hospital" for 14 years and 3 months, and has finally returned home.
It has become a widely discussed story online after the Facebook pageof Vachira Phuket Hospitalposted photos with the message, "A patient was admitted to Vachira Phuket Hospital in 2011 following a traffic accident, suffering brain and complete cervical spinal cord injuries. The patient underwent brain surgery and tracheostomy and was placed on a ventilator. Doctors continually tried to wean the patient off the ventilator, but due to the nature of the illness, the patient was unable to breathe independently. To date, the patient has been hospitalized for 14 years and 3 months."
Last year (2024), the neurosurgery team collaborated with palliative care and ongoing care teams to plan the patient's return home with a ventilator. They requested donations through Vachira Phuket Hospital to purchase a home ventilator and completed preparations for ongoing care in cooperation with Sri Sunthon Health Promoting Hospital and local government agencies.
Today, thanks to the cooperation of all parties, the family is ready to safely care for the patient with a ventilator at home this morning."
