The Navy revealed that a marine was injured by stepping on a landmine while clearing unexploded ordnance in Ban Nong Ree. It confirmed that Cambodia deliberately uses landmines to kill people in the area, a serious breach of international law.
On 21 Dec 2025, Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiphan, Navy spokesman, stated that at approximately 09:00 on 21 Dec 2025, a marine engineer stepped on a landmine while carrying out a mission in Ban Nong Ree (Ban Samlang), Chamrak Subdistrict, Mueang District, Trat Province.
The injured was Corporal Terdpong Phomnara from the Engineer Battalion, Marine Division. He sustained wounds to his right leg. Local units provided initial first aid and he was being transferred to Navy medical personnel for urgent treatment.
The Navy has closely monitored the marine’s condition and ordered related units to strictly inspect and secure the surrounding area to prevent similar incidents. It emphasizes the highest priority on the safety of personnel and local civilians. The Navy's Public Relations Office will provide further updates.
This incident clearly confirms that the Cambodian military still intentionally uses landmines to kill people in the area, constituting a serious violation of international law—especially obligations under the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines. It also violates principles of international humanitarian law designed to protect the lives and safety of military personnel and innocent civilians.
