On 23 December 2025 GMT+7, reporters reported that ongoing fighting along the Thai-Cambodian border has resulted in Thai soldiers being injured and killed. The most recent casualty was Private Thanaphat Nantawong, assigned to the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, King's Guard, who died in duty defending the nation's sovereignty at the Thai-Cambodian border area of Ban Nong Jan, Khok Sung District, Sa Kaeo Province on 23 December.
Later, reporters traveled to Chueak Village, Na Chik Subdistrict, Mueang Amnat Charoen District, the hometown of Private Thanaphat Nantawong. Nikorn Thongchit, the district chief of Mueang Amnat Charoen, along with the provincial Internal Security Operations Command official, Chalermchai Chantakot, a provincial administrative organization council member, local leaders, and villagers came to offer support to Private Thanaphat's family and assisted in preparing to receive his remains.
Miss Oranong Nantawong, 42, mother of Private Thanaphat, tearfully told reporters that she has only one son, Thanaphat Nantawong, who enlisted as a conscript about a year ago, serving in the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, King's Guard.
After hearing from his friends in the same unit that her son had been hit by gunfire during his duty, she was overwhelmed and trembling all over. She tried to contact him, hoping for a miracle, but was unable to reach him. Eventually, her son's friend called to deliver the tragic news. Earlier that day, her son had messaged her saying he was about to enter the battlefield, but then fell silent and did not contact her again.
Meanwhile, the unit contacted the family to inform them that Private Thanaphat's body would be returned to his homeland on 25 December 2025 GMT+7 at about 11:30 a.m. His remains will arrive by plane at the 22nd Military Circle in Ubon Ratchathani before being transported by vehicle for the religious funeral ceremony at Chueak Nok Temple, Na Chik Subdistrict, Mueang Amnat Charoen District.
