Army Chief Confirms Troops Continue Sovereignty Defense, Stresses Cambodia Must Declare Ceasefire First

The Army Chief revealed updates from the GBC meeting, affirming that troops continue their role in defending sovereignty amid ongoing clashes to achieve set objectives. He emphasized Cambodia must declare a ceasefire first to clarify the stance.

On 25 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Gen. Chaipruk Duangpraphat, Chief of Army Staff, spoke about the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting results, saying the conclusion is still pending. Currently, only discussions among the GBC secretariat are underway, detailing what agreements can be reached. Whether Cambodia will accept Thailand's proposals remains to be seen; we await the secretariat's meeting and the defense ministers' meeting of both countries on 27 Dec 2025 GMT+7. He stressed that our forces continue their duties in the area amid ongoing clashes, committed to performing their roles to the best of their ability.

When asked about one of the three proposals—that Cambodia, as the aggressor, must declare a ceasefire first—and whether any signs of this have appeared following correspondence to the Ministry of Defense, Gen. Chaipruk replied that Cambodia has continuously signaled since the start that it is considering and willing to comply. However, since we were not the instigators of the situation, once it occurred, we must defend our sovereignty.

When asked if Cambodia has been evasive in declaring a ceasefire first by suggesting both Thailand and Cambodia announce it simultaneously, Gen. Chaipruk said he believes Cambodia is trying to communicate this message to the Thai public. Asked if Thailand still insists Cambodia must declare first, he affirmed, “Certainly.”

When asked whether Cambodia is currently incapacitated, Gen. Chaipruk said that many of their forces near our sovereign territory have been destroyed—about 90%. However, in deeper areas, they still possess significant military equipment, though he declined to provide specifics. He believes that the operations are progressing satisfactorily according to the set objectives.
