On 29 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Major General Winthai Suwaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, revealed that the 2nd Army Region reported that an explosive ordnance disposal team from the 8th Engineer Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, stepped on an anti-personnel mine while conducting a security reinforcement mission in the Khao Sattasom area, Kantharalak District, Sisaket Province. Sergeant Major Sujin Jitkriyan was seriously injured, losing his left leg and sustaining wounds to his left eye. Authorities promptly provided first aid and transferred him to Surin Hospital for further treatment.
The Army spokesperson added that preliminary assessments suggest that many more landmines remain planted by the Cambodian side in areas under Thai control prior to the ceasefire declaration. Officials are working diligently to clear these mines despite the high-risk terrain. The incident is currently under investigation, with detailed evidence being collected. The Royal Thai Army will hand over all information to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally brief the international community, as this clearly violates the Ottawa Treaty. Additionally, the Army will report the matter to the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) for verification and fact-finding within the ceasefire agreement framework.
