The Royal Thai Army is preparing to review the release of "18 Cambodian soldiers" after detecting over 250 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Cambodia crossing into Thai sovereign territory along the border. This act is considered a violation of the de-escalation measures under the GBC agreement, reflecting a hostile stance toward Thailand.
On 29 December 2025 GMT+7, Major General Winthai Suwaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, reported that the Second Army Region had detected more than 250 UAVs flying from Cambodia into Thai sovereign airspace on the night of 28 December 2025 GMT+7. Intense UAV activity was observed in the border areas including Chong Bok, Chong An Ma, Khao Sattasom, Sam Tae, Don Tual, Chong Krang, Prasat Ta Muen Thom, and Chong Sai Taku.
These actions qualify as provocations and breaches of the de-escalation measures, contradicting the joint statement issued following the GBC meeting on 27 December 2025 GMT+7, which both sides had previously agreed upon.
The army spokesperson emphasized that such behavior demonstrates Cambodia's ongoing provocations and adversarial attitude toward Thailand, potentially jeopardizing the security and safety of military personnel and local residents in the border areas.
The Royal Thai Army may need to reconsider the handling of the release of 18 Cambodian personnel in light of the current situation and the recent conduct.
The army reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to peaceful approaches and prioritizing de-escalation through existing mechanisms. However, if violations of agreements and Thai sovereignty continue, the army must act to protect national interests and security.
